Abscess

An abscess is defined as a collection of pus that has formed in a cavity caused by infections or other foreign substances, such as bullet wounds or splinters. Abscesses form as a method of defending the body from the spread of infectious material to other parts of the body. By forming a pocket of pus, invading bacteria and other pathogens are prevented from entering.  Abscesses are usually treated surgically, through incisions and eventually the drainage of any pus. After the removal of an abscess, doctors may provide antibiotics to reduce or prevent the risk of another infection forming. Immediately after surgery, the risk of infection is higher as the wound is fresh and exposed.
