Allergic Reaction
An allergic reaction results when foreign, unwanted substances are detected by the body. These foreign substances are known as antigens, and cause the immune systems defence to be triggered. Common allergies are caused by dust, pollen, medicines or plants. The symptoms of allergic reactions may vary, including itching, blotchiness of the skin, rashes and swelling. A common allergy is hay fever Ðcaused by irritation of pollen and dust in the air. In some cases, allergic reactions may be life threatening; for example, over four hundred people die per year as a result of penicillin allergies, and over fifty die as a result of bee stings and fire ant stings.
