Amastia
Amastia is the term that refers to a condition where the areola, nipple and tissues of the breasts are absent. Oftentimes, the term amastia is used in an interchangeable manner with amazia, a condition referring to the absence of simply the areola and nipple, but not breast tissue. This rare condition may be unilateral or bilateral, unilateral referring to the lack of breast tissue on one side, and bilateral referring to the lack of breast tissue on both sides. In forty percent of bilateral amastia cases, birth abnormalities concerning other parts of the body have also occurred. This condition may be treated through reconstructive surgery.
