Anaesthetist
An anaesthetist is a doctor who specialises in administering anaesthesia during, before, and after surgical operations. The use of anaesthesia allows patients to experience little to no pain during medical procedures that may usually be significantly painful otherwise. The term anaesthesia was discovered by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in 1846. Oftentimes before an operation, patients will receive general anaesthesia, which is simply a drug-induced loss of consciousness that enables the patient’s body to block out any painful sensations they may feel if conscious during surgery. An anaesthetists work may include humans or animals, and the use of anaesthesia is common in both areas.
