Antibiotic
An antibiotic is a substance that is used to fight and kill bacteria. Antibiotics are often prescribed to patients after surgery to prevent bacteria from invading fresh wounds and causing infections. The first recorded use of antibiotics was by the ancient Chinese, and many other ancient groups such as the Arabs, Greeks, and Egyptians. Penicillin is one of the most widely used antibiotics today, and was used extensively during World War II in order to prevent infections from battle wounds. Although penicillin is a highly effective antibiotic, over five hundred people die from allergies related to this drug each year in the United States.
