Areola

The areola is most commonly known as the darker area surrounding the nipple on a breast. The reason for this darker coloured area is due to the fact that the areola determines where the ducts of the mammary glands are located. The areola consists of several openings which secrete milk during lactation, as well as other openings that serve to protect the area during suckling or breast feeding. The colour of the areola is usually genetically determined, and can range from a yellowish colour to a dark brown. The areola is generally lighter in fair skinned people, and darker in people with darker skin.
