Calcification - Calcium Deposits

Calcification occurs when mineral calcium deposits build up in soft tissue, causing it to harden. A common area where calcification may occur is the breast tissue. This may become worrisome for a woman as it may indicate breast cancer. Breast calcification is able to be detected through a mammography in which a digital image is taken of the breast and its tissue in order for analysis. The hardening of breast tissue may occur for a multitude of reasons. Injuries, ageing and inflammation are all factors that may contribute to the calcification of breast tissue. Other areas may also become calcified, such as the shoulders and chest.
