Cannula

A cannula is a small tube that is able to be inserted into the body in order to deliver or remove fluid. A cannula can be associated with an IV, used when a patient needs to have his or her body fluids maintained. The use of cannulae may cause specific problems, however, such as the formation of a hematoma, which is a buildup of blood in the veins, or infiltration may occur, when the cannula is placed into other tissue rather than the vein. Cannulae are not only used in hospitals and with medicine. A cannula may be used with body piercing and other non medical practises.
