Chloasma

A chloasma is a brown or pink coloured skin pigmentation that appears in blotches. This condition occurs due to an excess of melanin in the body. Causes of this condition can be hereditary; for example, during pregnancy chloasma can occur, but usually fades after giving birth. Other factors that could cause this condition could be a phototoxic reaction to certain cosmetic products such as deodorants, a reaction to hormonal contraceptives, or prolonged sun exposure. Chloasma is most prevalent in women, and rarely occurs in males. Chloasma usually occurs between the ages of twenty and thirty, and is more common in individuals who have naturally darker skin.
