Cleft Lip

A cleft lip is a type of congenital deformity that occurs in the foetus during pregnancy. A cleft lip occurs when a section of the lip is missing, leaving a visible gap. The cleft may be incomplete, when only a small section of the lip is missing, or may be complete, when a gap from the lip to the nose forms. A few months after birth, corrective surgery is performed on the lip in order to close the gap. In both incomplete and complete cases, a full incision is needed in order to restore the muscle that runs along the lip.
