Epidermis

The epidermis is the uppermost layer of the skin that serves to protect the body from invading particles, all the while controlling the bodys temperature levels. On the epidermis, many dead, keratinised skin particles are found that form a protective barrier. Because the cells are keratinised, they are tougher and more durable, making it harder for invaders to penetrate the skin and enter the body. Although helpful to the body, many individuals use exfoliants in order to remove large amounts of these dead skin cells. Dead cells may also cause dirt and other unwanted particles to gather on the skin, leaving it with a somewhat dirty appearance.
