Extracapsular Rupture

An extracapsular rupture occurs when a silicone implant is torn and the silicone gel moves to an area that is outside of the fibrous scar tissue that forms after implants are inserted. A ruptured breast implant can be dangerous if the leaking silicone gel or liquid is exposed to tissues. The presence of a foreign object in the body, such as silicone that has leaked from an implant, may cause excessive scarring to occur, thus leaving the breasts tender and hard. Ruptures may occur for various reasons, such as mishandling by doctors, pressure from the stacking of implants, or may occur as a result of trauma.
