Mastectomy

A mastectomy is a procedure involving the removal of either one or both breasts through surgery. It is most often required for women suffering from breast cancer or similar conditions, when other therapies such as chemotherapy or radiation treatment have been unsuccessful. It is also possible to perform a lumpectomy, which involves taking a smaller portion of the breast away instead of removing the entire breast. The procedure performed depends upon the severity of the condition. Most women who have undergone a mastectomy for whatever reason will have breast reconstruction performed, as the effects of the surgery are very noticeable.
