Sebaceous Gland

A sebaceous gland is a microscopic gland in the skin that secretes sebum, a waxy or oily substance. The purpose of this substance is to lubricate the hair of humans and animals. In humans, these glands are heavily concentrated in areas such as the face and scalp, but they are distributed throughout the whole body. Sebum serves to lubricate the hair, preventing it from becoming dry or brittle and thus keeping it healthy. Individuals with more oily hair may produce sebum more frequently than others, whereas individuals with dry hair, or problems with dandruff may not produce as much sebum.
