Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome, also known as TSS is a rare but extremely dangerous infection caused by a build up of a bacterial toxin. Toxic shock syndrome can occur from cuts, burns and other sources, but the more common cause is from prolonged use of a tampon in women. Many individuals may be exposed to toxic shock syndrome but will not develop the infection. Symptoms of TSS include high body temperature (above 38.9 degrees celcius), vomiting, headaches and rashes. Treatment of this infection is often done in the intensive care unit of a hospital, as the onset can be very severe.
