I see that you have written that you do not do calf implants as they need to be removed very often

Q. Dear Dr Banwell, I see that you have written that you do not do calf implants as they need to be removed very often. Please could you direct me to some literature about this and the relevant risks before I pursue this option? I have charcot marie toothe and am desperate to improve the appearance of my skinny legs but dont want to go through the ordeal and expense of surgery if there is a high risk of it failing or causing damage to my muscles or nerves? Many thanks I really do appreciate your advice and honesty!! Kind regards

A. Hi Gail I am sure you will find a surgeon who is prepared to insert calf implants in you. All I am saying is that there is a high chance of problems post-op mainly regarding infection, implant movement and extrusion – damage to muscles and nerves is less common good luck!

I see that you make mention of calf implants for people with charcot marie toothe on this site

Q. Dear Dr Shoaib, I see that you make mention of calf implants for people with charcot marie toothe on this site. I have this condition and am considering having calf implants. Is this a procedure that you have carried out on patients with CMT before and if so what has the success rate been? Are there any risks that I need to know about? And do you have an idea of the costs involved? Thank you for your help! I really do appreciate it!! Kind regards

A. Thanks for your enquiry. I have done calf implants before but for CMT disease, the results aren’t that great unfortunately. We do see improvements, but people with CMT disease want to be able to show their legs in public and even with implants they often don’t do that. So, I can certainly do the procedure, but we would need to have a in depth consultation first so that you don’t end up being disappointed with the final results.

Thanks for you answer to my first question, Re: implant

Q. Thanks for you answer to my first question, Re: implant too small. can you use seline implants for the calf? the reason i ask is because the volume can be increased gradually in order to obtain the correct size.

A. Hi there. I have access to all implants from most manufacturers. However, I’ve never seen a saline calf implant – they’re all silicone and can be either soft silicone or hard silicone. So I’m afraid we simply have to choose a size of calf implant together from the list available.

If you have bow legs can a calf augmentation bring out more of a straighter look from the front and the back?

Q. If you have bow legs can a calf augmentation bring out more of a straighter look from the front and the back?

A. hi there. A typical bow leg is quite a complex shape which cannot be completely corrected with calf implants, I’m afraid

I had polio as a young child which has left me with an undevelpoed muscle in my left leg

Q. I had polio as a young child which has left me with an undevelpoed muscle in my left leg, i had calf augmentation just over 2 years ago, however i’m disapointed with the final results because my leg is still considerably smaller, can i have it re-done with a larger implant.

A. Hi there. This is always a difficult problem, and we see the same difficulties with people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease as well as with the effects of Polio. Sometimes implants are not large enough that come off the shelf, and you might have to consider a custom made implant, but this does add considerably to the cost. Often I say to people that we sometimes have to accept the limitations of the procedure, though.

My son was born with a short achilles tendon and was forced to have casting to stretch the muscle

Q. My son was born with a short achilles tendon and was forced to have casting to stretch the muscle as naturally as possible. This is resulted in his left calf muscle not reaching its full development. I was wondering whether a calf implant would help the situation. He’s only 17 years old and I’m sure whether he is too young to be considered surgery. Any chance you give me your opinion on this please.

A. I am not sure whether you are asking about functional improvement or cosmetic improvement. A calf implant might be able to help improve the cosmetic appearance but unless it is really a major issue I would leave things well alone. If there are functional problems I would consult a physiotherapist or an orthopaedic surgeon Cheerio PB
