My daughter is 15 and was allowed to have otoplasty

Q. Hi My daughter is 15 and was allowed to have otoplasty through the NHS but now they have withdrawn funding. Her doctor has said that the only way she get have the procedure is through a private hospital however all have said that she needs to be 18. I am a single parent with very limited funds and do not know where to go with this. She has said that she refuses to go to college unless she has the op and the doctor simply told her that this was her choice. I felt that he was totally patronising and although says that I could lodge an appeal against the PCT he is not really convincing me that his practice would give me the support. He also claims that because her education is not been affected the chances of her winning the appeal are slim. Are you able to offer any advise or assistance as I am totally at rock bottom with this.

A. Thank you very much for your enquiry, I’m sorry that your doctor would not be very supportive about your daughter in her quest to have her problem is corrected.   Unfortunately, the government has tightened a lot of types of surgery to allow and often probably correction is one of these procedures.   It maybe unlikely without your GP’s support that you will get this operation funded within the NHS.   The only other option for us to do is to pay for the operation to be performed and you can find out more information about what’s involved in the surgery by visiting our website http://www.aurora-clinics.co.uk.   If you would like to book for consultation please do so by ringing us on 01844-214362 or email us at info@aurora-clinics.co.uk.   If you would still like to find out the NHS it may be worthwhile scheduling an appointment seeing another GP who may be more supportive of her application to have the surgery funded in the NHS.   Many thanks for your enquiry, we do look forward to meeting you in the near future.   Best wishes yours sincerely,   Adrian Richards Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics

A. Hi – you can certainly have cosmetic surgery if you’re under 18, you just have to ask your GP to refer you. You can ask whether this is something you can get on the NHS, or you can ask your GP to send you to a private plastic surgeon

I am 46 years old and my right ear pretrudes more

Q. Hi, Mr Shoaib, I am 46 years old and my right ear pretrudes more than. the left. I was wondering how much it would cost to get it pinned back.

A. Hi – it’s certainly possible to reduce the prominence of one ear and try and match the other side, but it’s not possible to give you complete symmetry. If you’re happy to accept the limitations of the procedure, then you have a choice of having it done under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. If you would like a price, please call 01415520828 and my staff can help with this information. They can also let you know how can take things further, and book an appointment to see me so that I can have a look at your ear. Kind regards.  Taimur Shoaib

I have a problem about the size of my ears and that

Q. Dear Mr Shailesh Vadodaria, I have a problem about the size of my ears and that they stick out. Basically throughout my whole life, I feel my ears have held me back slightly and have received a abuse over the years about them, they are really bringing down my confidence. I want to ask whether you think there could be anything done for free on the NHS? I am 21 years old now and never have approached the NHS about my ears, because its embarrassing for a starter and I’m from and indian family, surgery is out the question, but I have grown a lot and realise it is a big issue. Please write back to me as soon as possible. Kind Regards

A. Thank you for your email. I am sympathetic with your predicaments of your ears. It appears that you may have prominent ears. They can be ‘set back’ under local anaesthetic as a day case. Please contact your GP to inquire about possibility of getting them operated under NHS umbrella.   I have following suggestions to help you further: 1) Please send me good quality photos for  my initial comments. 2) You may wish to arrange a detailed consultation to allow me to examine you and give my opinion. 3) Please visit our website: www.vadodariaplasticsurgery.com  to allow you to develop better insight into the procedure. Please contact my office on 0208 997 3976 between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm or by email on info@vadodariaplasticsurgery.com for further guidance. My 4 year old sons ears stick out and I would like

Q. My 4 year old sons ears stick out and I would like to have them re-shaped, which I have also had done but when I was 18, however I am not sure that this can be done privately at his age, please can you advise where I can go for a consultation. Many thanks Kate

A. Hi kate Many thanks indeed for your kind email It sounds as though your son might well be suitable for surgery. However, regardless of the surgery being performed privately or on the NHS, we are ethically only allowed to operate when patients have an understanding of what surgery entails and the risks/benefits, etc. Usually this means around about the age of 6.  The other issue is that the ears are continuing to develop at this age and we want the cartilage to mature somewhat which makes things easier to reshape. Please do contact my team on 0845 2600 261 or email help@paulebanwell.com to arrange an appointment so that we can start the process. I look forward to meeting you Cheerio Paul Banwell www.paulebanwell.com
