I am thinking of face lift but terrified of general anesthesia
Q. Dear Sir I am thinking of face lift but terrified of general. Who decides what kind of anesthesia is to be used during a cosmetic surgical procedure and how would I be sure that all possible risks have been eliminated in my own particular case and based on my medical history before getting a facelift that requires anesthesia? I would love to go ahead and have no particular health concerns and am giving up smoking so just wanted to know what other things you would be best to check to make sure everything goes well? Kind regards
A. Thank you for your inquiry. The type of anesthetic is decided between yourself and your surgeon/anaesthetist team, but in general terms you need to be aware that the safest is still a general anesthetic [prices safest local anesthetic with intravenous sedation]. Even so, the risks and related to the anesthetic are not zero, but they tend to be in the area of 1:100,000 of a serious event or death related to the anesthetic. That is more or less the same as flying on a commercial airliner, and 4 time safer than driving on a motor way. Stopping smoking is very important for facelift surgery because it does reduce the risk of damage to the skin flaps that are raised in order to tighten the skin.
