Q. Good Morning. My name is Abby I have been overweight ever since I was a young and my weight has yoyo’d over the years due to a mix of crash diets, exercise and lack of exercise. The skin around my stomach has stretch marks and is very loose and looks like it folds at the bottom. I am now 12st 10lbs but am only 5ft 5 in height and attempting to get down to 9 or 10st which I have managed before so I am able to get the very best out of abdominoplasty surgery. What I would like to ask is what happens if I continue to lose weight after the operation. Am I risking more loose skin and undoing all the good work the surgeon may do?

A. Dear Abby, Thank you very much for your enquiry which is very sensible. With tummy tuck surgery I normally advice people that it’s best to get down to a stable weight which you feel is maintainable for you. The problems do come if you do lose weight following a tummy tuck which can lead to excess skin. Therefore, the best thing to do is to diet sensibly, get down to a stable weight which you’re happy with and consider this surgery at that stage. You’re obviously thinking seriously about this surgery and well done for thinking so quite clearly about what is best for you. Q. I am currently 6 months pregnant and am interested in the tummy tuck surgery, How long would I generally have to wait after the baby is born before I would be able to under go surgery? I know this all depends on any possible complication after the birth but I would just like an idea.

A. Thank you for your inquiry.   There are several elements that guide the timing for abdominoplasty surgery after pregnancy.   An important consideration is whether you choose to and are able to breast feed, in which case I would suggest contemplating surgery after you have stopped breast feeding.   Another element is the weight gain related to pregnancy. Many women are able to lose most of the pregnancy related weight, but it is fed to say that it takes considerable time. Since you have another 3 months into the pregnancy, making an effort to avoid a significant weight gain would be very worthwhile.   Finally, issues related to general health, possible complications after birth would obviously take priority over an abdominoplasty procedure.   By and large if the above elements are not relevant, I would suggest waiting for approximately 3-6 months after the pregnancy the for you would consider having the abdominoplasty.

Q. Ive had a child through C section and have put on alot of weight which is hard 2 shift and my belly hangs would the tummy tuck surgery be suitable for me?

A. Thank you for your inquiry.   Yes indeed, this is one of the common indications for tummy-tuck or abdominoplasty surgery.   If you are intent on losing weight, I would suggest however they to try to lose some of the weight from pregnancy prior to the surgery rather than after the operation.

Q. I am 27, in good medical health but have a lot of fat on my tummy after having my baby. It is shaped like a double pouch. Will you be able to get rid of these pouches of fat?

A. It is difficult to visualise the abdomen without a clinical examination, but from what you’re describing there can be either: – an apron above and a larger one below the bellybutton – two areas of fullness in the lower abdomen on each side of the midline   In general, if the skin of the abdomen has lost its elasticity, an abdominoplasty procedure is more likely to restore the contours than liposuction.   If the degree of laxity is moderate, it is sometimes possible to achieve significant improvement using radio frequency assisted liposuction (Bodytite), which helps both to remove the volume which is excessive and tighten the skin.
