Q. I had my original breast implants removed and replaced on 3rd August 2010 and since 3 weeks ago have developed a seroma. Initially my right breast swole up really big and then when i was in the shower it started leaking a lot of fluid, now it continually leaks fluid and i have to wear a dressing to protect my clothes also the breast is very different from the left one in size and shape (bigger and higher) my surgeon says to take anitibiotics and just leave it alone but i am verry self concience about the look of my breasts and the constant stream of fluid. Can anything be done.
A. Thank you for your enquiry. I am not familiar with a standard protocol for treatment of the seroma of the breast, but my policy has been to explore the wound and attempt closure so that the implant is protected from infection beyond what antibiotics can do. In addition, there is some guidance related to the potential benefit of biopsy of the breast capsule in the presence of a persistent seroma

Q. I had breast implants over the muscle 14 months ago using 755cc implants. I have recently been getting a soreness which feels slightly bruised in one breast only for the past month and feels like this all the time, could it be a serious problem or should I just wait for it to go?
A. it’s difficult to know exactly what’s going on in you without seeing you, but I do see my patients from time to time a few years after their surgery because they’re worried about something. If your surgeon is no longer available then you may want to find a surgeon local to you, but you will obviously have to pay for a private consultation.

Q. Hey there. My question is about breast implants and the consequences of having them. I have read mixed views on whether having implants can raise the chances of having breast cancer. Will the implants not make it harder to spot the first signs when being screened? I would really like to improve the look of my breasts but this particular area is what is stopping me going any further. Thank you
A. Thank you for your enquiry. As far as current knowledge goes, silicone breast implants do not appear to increase or decrease the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer remains a very high risk in the Western population, and as far as I have understood, the medical literature has not differentiated between the average stage of breast cancer at diagnosis, for women that have breast implants as opposed to women who don’t. That means that on average, at the moment of diagnosis , breast cancer would be as advanced with or without breast implants. With regards to screening, which takes place usually after the age of 50, unless there is a strong family history of breast cancer, my understanding is that the presence of an implant, irrespective of the type, decreases slightly the pickup rate of breast cancer. This would be at the stage when you cannot yet feel anything wrong in the breast.

Q. I had breast implants over 3 years and I have began to notice a slight rippling, is this normal? How long will it take to go away?
A. Rippling is caused by very thin skin over the implants. I have had very good results with microfat graft willing to the skin above the implants. This thickens the skin and reduces and hides the ripplimg. It isn done under local or general anaesthetic . The cost varies on the amount of fat needed and if it is done under local or general anaesthetic. The cost is from £1800 to £4200

Q. I am 25 years old and have fairly large breasts, 34 D size. My left breast is considerably smaller than the right one and I don’t think their size helps the matter. I would like to look at options to get them level again. Please could you send me some details or point me to some more information?
A. OK, asymmetrical breasts can basically be made equal by reducing one or augmenting both (the implants make the breast a differnt shape, hence the augmentation of both), by the sound of it you are looking at a bilateral reduction (if you are unhappy by the larger side).Depending on the size difference, the scars may either be the same of differnt on the two sides. If you would like to read more, please see www.barbarajemec.com under breast and contact detailsbest wishesBarbara

Q. Can you tell me how long will it take me to recover from breast asymmetry surgery provided there are no problems after surgery?
A. I depends what type of surgery you have done. If you have implants only, recovery is about 2 weeks. If you need an uplift or reduction then I would suggest 3 weeks

Q. What would you say is the most effective non surgical breast enhancement treatment. I am reasonably happy with my breast size but would just like them to sit up like they used to. I am wary of going under the knife so this is why im asking about non-surgical treatments.
A. The non surgical treatments available for breast enlargement don’t actually lift the breast – they just add volume to them. You can see some examples at www.labelleforme.co.uk/macrolane.html. For uplifts, sometimes you have to have surgery, which is very safe nowadays
