Q. Hello there, Im joining the Police force next september and have a tattoo on my left forearm. I dont want this to hinder me in the recruitment process and have been thinking of getting it removed for a while now. Its approximately 4.5×5 inches in size. i am seriously considering to have it removed using excision but am wondering if the size would be an issue?.. Scarring is not really a worry to me although obviously the lesser the better.. i was just wondering how much approximately and if you provide me with an email adress i can send you a photo. A. That’s quite a large tattoo so to remove it would probably require a few operative procedures. The way I often remove tattoos is with what we call “serial excision”. The number of procedures you need is determined by the laxity of your skin, and I need to feel the laxity in your skin so I would really have to see you for a consultation to give you more information I’m afraid.

Q. from a previous relationship i have 2 very small tattoos, (one outline of a heart in blak, and on chinsee letters ) i was forced into getting, i was wonfering how much it is to get leserd of as my doctor wont refur me on nhs, aslo i have a number if cutts on my arm from self harming, that i cant show anyone, i ccanteven wear t-shirts, making me very depressed. i was wondering how much also this would cost to remove or laser or whatever the best option is.
A. Thank you very much for your enquiry, it does sound as if it maybe possible to reduce the appearance of your tattoos and this is normally done with laser therapy. We unfortunately do not have a laser in our clinic and it might be worth scheduling appointment with a clinic that does specialize in laser removal of tattoos. Q. I have a fairly small tattoo (1cm x 2cm) on the top of my right breast, which prevents me from wearing certain cloths. I hate it and deeply regret having it done. I had 8 laser treatments with no success. The black ink partially faded away but the green and yellow inks are still there and my skin on that area is slightly risen. I’m tired of wasting my time and money, so I’ve considered excision. My biggest concern is the noticeable scaring that will be left. I just don’t want to do anything that will make the area look any worst. Is there any way of minimizing scaring? How much would the procedure cost? Healing time? Thanks
A. Thank you very much for your enquiry, probably the best way of treating your tattoo is with laser therapy which can reduce the pigment within the tattoo itself. It is possible to remove the tattoo with surgery but in the upper chest area this can sometimes lead to unsightly scarring in this region. I think it would be worthwhile scheduling a consultation with a laser tattoo removing specialist to get the best idea of the most appropriate treatment for you. Q. Hello, with fail after fail I have been trying to find a place that removed tattoos via excision. i have a small crecent moon on my neck bellow my ear, thin, i want it cut off and cant find anywhere that does non laser removal. could you forward me to someone who does this? i am interested in the cost as well so i know how much to set aside. thank you in advance for any information.

A. Thank you for your email. Cosmetic tattooing is quite popular amongst the young population during their college and university stage of their lives. Most of the tattoos are permanent since the pigments injected are water insoluble and can stay into the deeper layers of the skin all throughout life. Many a times one would like to get a tattoo removed because of a variety of reasons: 1. The presence of a tattoo on an exposed part of the body can compromise job opportunities. There are many types of treatments available for the removal of cosmetic tattoos: 1. Laser tattoo removal – only possible depending upon the colour of the pigments used for tattooing. This requires more than one treatment and the success rate varies. 2. Cosmetic tattoos can be surgically treated by: · Removal (excision) and direct closure – if the dimension of the tattoo design is small and slim then the whole tattoo can be removed under local anaesthetics and the resultant defect can be closed directly. Mr Vadodaria uses dissolvable stitches hence they do not require removal. Please note that this procedure will leave behind a visible scar. · Multi-Stage serial excision – If the design/dimensions of the tattoo are wide/big then it may not be possible to remove the tattoo completely in one stage. In such situations it can be dealt with by multi-stage serial excision of a tattoo. In such circumstances, a proportion of the tattoo is removed in such a way that the remaining defect can be closed directly using dissolving stitches. Once the wound has nicely healed, further excision can be undertaken as a second stage procedure. The interval may be between 6 weeks to 3 months. These kinds of stage operations are continued until the remaining tattoo is completely removed. Please note that there will be a permanent scar following this procedure and the scar can stretch depending upon the tension on the suture line. The scar can be camouflaged with water insoluble cosmetic foundation creams. · Removal (excision) and Reconstruction with a skin graft – Many a times the dimension of the cosmetic tattoo and its anatomical location is too big and wide that it is not possible to remove such a tattoo even with multi-stage serial excision. In such cases the tattoo skin is completely removed and the defect is resurfaced with a skin graft. The skin graft looks like a patch of your own skin (like a pocket on a shirt). For very big and wide tattoos, other kinds of plastic surgical techniques can be used in the form of tissue expansion and flap reconstruction. Mr Vadodaria will discuss with you possibilities as well as his preferred option in a given situation.
