Hi I am 47 male, I am very self concious about my side profile and this has affected my sef esteem since teenage years, I am fed up with being called a chinless wonder or growing goaty beards to conceal this, I have been seriously considering having a chin implant and want to ask about possible risks and how procedure is performed. A. Thank you for your inquiry. I normally use Medpor implants for chin augmentation surgery. The operation is usually carried out through the inside of the mouth, and takes approximately 45 minutes. It is typically a day case operation under a general anaesthetic, but can be carried out also under a local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation. I typically recommend doing a computer stimulation to evaluate the degree of change that would optimise your profile, and based on that to choose the size and shape of the implant. Ultimately during the surgery I still contour the implant to some extent, to match individual patient’s requirements. The risks are related to chin augmentation include the anaesthetic, bleeding, infection, deep vein thrombosis, and reduced sensation in the lower lip.

Q. I have had a chin implant but the result is lop sided, one side drops below the Jawline, the surgeon offered to put this right at the same time as he was to undertake my cheek implants, however i no longer have confidence in him can i have another surgeon correct it?

Q. Hello, I had a chin inplant about a year and half ago. It got infected and had to be removed after 2 weeks. After the removal of the inplant it has left my mouth droopy, my face is like hanging lose. my lower lip has gone in. My chin may have streched because of the implant. It seems like the chin needs to tighened or something to make it look like the way I use to as I look very wierd of the lose chin and hanging face. A. Thank you for your inquiry. Ptosis of the chin is related to loss of support to the bone when the implant was removed. This is because in the presence of infection your surgeon was probably reluctant to put any sutures inside the pocket. It can be corrected either by using suspension sutures through the same access incision inside the mouth, or by replacement of a chin implant. I don’t know whether you had silicone or Medpor implant, but I tend to favour the Medpor implants.

Possible solutions include: – anterior necklift +/- chin implant – formal necklift +/- chin implant – liposuction to the neck and chin implant The degree of contouring with liposuction is more limited, as it only addresses the superficial layer of fatty tissue in the neck.
