Q. I am an 18yr old Asian woman and I would like to have more open and wider looking eyes. The way my eyes are now everyone is constantly asking me if I am tired or sleepy. A friend of mine told me about a procedure called blepharoplasty. She said that this eyelid procedure would give my eyes more of a crease and make my eyes appear more open and alert. Is this a very painful procedure and is it safe?
A. Blepharoplasty for eyelid surgery can be performed – it’s not usually too painful but there is bruising and swelling for a few weeks afterwards. Asian blepharoplasties are usually performed under general anaesthetic if it’s more complex than just a simple blepharoplasty

Q. How old is too old for eyelid surgery? My mother-in-law, at 74, is interested in the procedure! With skin so fragile at that age, is she even a candidate for eyelid surgery, or should she just resign herself to looking rather elderly? Her eyes were very beautiful once.
A. Thank you for your inquiry. Surgery for the eyelids is still possible, but there are a number of considerations related to general health, as well as the anaesthetics of the eyelids and their support, which will determine what type any extent of surgery she would be able to have. One element that is difficult to restore however is the volume, and it is fair to say that we’re not able to recreate the shape and appearance of young woman ‘ s eyes, but rather improve the current situation. It were necessary to assess the exact situation in consultation, in order to give her and you guidance regarding the options available.

Q. I would like some information on the typical recovery time for eyelid surgery. I want to use my holiday time for an eyelid lift, but I’m not sure 14 days would be sufficient time to recover enough to return to work, as I don’t particularly want my coworkers to know for certain that I’ve had the surgery, just that I’ve been on holiday.
A. Thank you for your inquiry. 2 weeks is often sufficient full recovery from eyelid surgery, and certainly if you are referring to the upper eyelids. For the lower eyelid surgery, it does depend on the amount of bruising that occurs, and to some extent that correlate with the age, where younger patients tends to have a swifter recovery.
