Q. I have a tattoo that runs from the bottom of my spine up to the centre of my back and I would like this either removed or made less noticeable. The colour of the tattoo is black with no other added colours would this be something you could remove sort of surgery would this require? I understand that it is hard to give any idea of price without seeing me but as far as treatment is concerned I assume it would require several visits? Any help you can offer would be greatly welcome. Thank you

Q. I have a regreatable tattoo on the inside of my right arm. I feel I have well grown out of this and want to look into having it removed. Its about 4 inches long and all black. Can it be removed in one treatment or woiuld I have to come in several times?

A. You have a few options – surgery and laser. The laser treatment leaves no scar usually and needs to be repeated on several occasions. Surgery may be possible in one go and will leave a scar – whether we can do it all at once depends on how lax the skin is in that area. A. Thank you for your email. I only perform surgical removal of tatoos. Tatoos can be also removed by laser treatment. I do not do Laser tattoo removal. Q. I have a small seahorse tattoo on my (L) shoulder blade about 1 1/2inch long and would like it removed. The main colours are blue and green and understand the latter being a difficult colour to remove. What does the surgical procedure entail for removal and is it removed in one procedure or does this take many? regards

A. You have a couple of options for tattoo removal – laser and excision. Excision is performed so that you have as small a scar as possible and sometimes it takes more than one treatment to do this, and each time you have surgery you have a cost associated with it. If there’s enough laxity in the skin to remove it in one go then we would go ahead and do that, but it’s difficult to know exactly what we can do without seeing you. A. We have a great laser for tattoo removal and depending on the size it may be £100 to £250 for treatment. The number of treatments you need varies according to the depth of the pigmentation and the colour of the pigments. Q. I have an embarrassing tattoo that I gave myself years ago. As I have matured It has gotten very embarrassing as it looks unsightly and it has prevented me from wearing certain clothes. How can I get it removed?

A. Thank you for your inquiry.   The best thing is to start by seeing someone who specialises in laser tattoo removal, and discuss your options.   I am not up-to-date with this type of treatment since I do not provide it, but I know that things have progressed significantly in terms of quality of the results.   Be prepared however that sometimes the result will not involve a complete removal of the tattoo and some staining may persist.

Q. I am looking for a clinic in Scotland that offers tattoo removal. I have a number of them from when i was younger and as i age so are my tattoos. Is it possible to have them cut out because a scar would be better then what i have. Or can you laser them off. If you could help i would be very grateful

A. It all depends on what kind of tattoos they are – if they’re large and professional with lots of colours, particularly reds and greens then sometimes you can only have them lightened a little. Amateur tattoos (blue dots, “love” and “hate” – that kind of thing!) are a lot easier to remove but even then, lasers can sometimes lead to changes in skin colouration (hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation), there is a need for repeated treatments, and there is a risk that all the tattoo is not going to go away. There are rare risks of bleeding bruising and scarring. The treatment usually feels like a rubber band pinging on your skin.  I don’t do laser tattoo removal myself just yet, I only remove them surgically, but my colleagues do treat them. If you want to have a consultation with the Glasgow SKN clinic, then you should ask for Vivek Sivarajan or Iain Mackay, both of whom are very competent plastic surgeons, if you would like to speak to a laser surgeon.
