Breast Implants Are Safer and Easier

There is a new method of having breast implants done. It is a no touch method that is easier for the doctor and the recovery is faster for the patient.

Silicone for breast implants are closer to real breasts in the way they look and feel. Many times this is the method of choice when having breast augmentation done. However, since they are pre-filled, it can be hard to fit them into the small incision that is made on the breast. On the other side are saline implants that are first inserted and then filled by the doctor with the saline solution.

However, doctors can now use the Keller Funnel No Touch Technique to insert the silicone into the breast. The technique is similar to using a cake decorating bag. The doctor is able to insert the silicone implant into the breast without ever having to actually touch the implant.

It is a very easy procedure and it is surprising it took so long to come up with. The implant itself is placed into the Keller Funnel. The funnel is large at one end and then becomes smaller at the other, again similar to a cake decorating bag. The doctor makes the cut into the breast and the small end of the funnel is placed into the opening. Now the doctor squeezes the large end of the funnel slowly, to work the silicone implant down the funnel and into the breast. The silicone implant is flexible and moves easily down the funnel and into the opening.

Another advantage of using this procedure is that patients have had speedier recovers. Patients have reported that they healed faster and this may be because there is far less trauma to the breasts since the silicone implant is easier to insert. Also, Dr. Drew Ordon of the Doctors, feels that the Keller Funnel Technique may reduce the risk of contracture. Contracture is when hard tissue forms around the implant. A doctor has to press and apply pressure to the area to break the tissue up. This is very painful and uncomfortable for the patient. There is no clear reason why contracture happens in some patients. Theories have been that infections or the talc on the doctor’s gloves may be the reason. The Keller Funnel Technique removes all reasons for the doctor to touch the implant, reducing the risk of infections occurring.

Bariatric Cure for Diabetes in Persons with Morbid Obesity

Bariatric surgery has been touted as a cure for diabetes mellitus in persons with morbid obesity. Experts say that this is related to the weight loss that follows surgery. People with morbid obesity are dangerously overweight and develop diabetes as a complication. Bariatric surgery is a common procedure done to help these morbidly obese people to lose weight and reduce blood sugar.

Obesity is a key cause of diabetes. This condition occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce adequate insulin to reduce glucose in the blood. In morbid obesity, a variety of factors lead to inadequate production of insulin and increased blood sugar. Following bariatric surgery, reduced food intake and the subsequent weight loss allows the pancreas to adequately deal with lower levels of blood glucose, As a result, the diabetes disappears.

According to Dr. P.K. Reddy, Head of the Bariatric Surgery Department at Apollo Hospital, bariatric surgery is done by either of two methods – gastric banding or gastric bypass. Gastric banding is achieved by placing an inflatable silicone device around the upper portion of the stomach. In gastric bypass surgery, all or part of the stomach is removed and the remaining portion directly attached to the small intestine. Both procedures reduce stomach size, volume of food intake and produce quick weight loss.

One of Dr. Reddy’s patients shared his “life changing experience” after bariatric surgery. He weighed 163 kgs before surgery and also had diabetes, hypertension and gout. Ten months after his surgical procedure, he weighed 90 kgs and said that his diabetes, hypertension and gout have disappeared completely. Dr. Torsten Olbers, Senior Consultant with Imperial College in London, confirmed that patients experience relief from diabetes within weeks of having bariatric surgery.

Abeezar Sarela, Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Leeds also explained that there is well documented evidence which shows that diabetes begins to resolve even before the patient begins to lose weight. He also reported that in one case, one of his patients reduced his insulin intake from an excessive 500 units per day to none at all. Dr. Sarela concluded by adding that the body becomes magically more sensitive to insulin during surgery and that further research was needed on this exciting phenomenon.

Minimal Pain During Cosmetic Procedures

Although many plastic surgeons can do a very good job and achieve excellent results, the doctors that lower their patient’s pain and discomfort are many times much more successful. Why a person choses to have plastic surgery varies from person to person, however how they choose who will be their surgeon comes down many times to the pre and post surgery pain. A direct relationship to the success of a surgeon and their ability to keep the patient comfortable and pain free, reflects on how successful they are.

Plastic surgeons need to tell their patients what to expect through each step of the surgery process. There should be nothing more than small pain, other patients will lose faith in the doctor. Making sure patients know what to expect is a huge part of how they react to the procedure being done. All patients should be treated and dealt with individually when it comes to pain tolerances and how to handle it. Pain after the surgery can be dealt with by using strong medications for several days.

However, pain is not just about invasive procedures, it needs to be dealt with in cases of injectable procedures as well. Doctors that delver pain free botox and similar filler treatments are held to a higher regard then those who do not. This is extremely important in any plastic surgeon’s business, since word of mouth is very powerful. Positive feed back requires intense committeemen to the services provided and dedication to every patient that comes into the office.

Furthermore, pain needs to be handled by degrees of pain. As any surgery becomes more invasive the amount of pain associated with it will be increased and how to control it becomes more important. But, this doesn’t mean that non invasive surgery pain should be taken lightly either.

Pain can vary from patient to patient, based on their weight and pain threshold. Heavier patients may have more pain because there is more fat and skin that is removed in a procedure such as abdominoplasty. While a thinner patient has less fat and only loose skin that is being removed. This can be true in procedures that deal with muscles as well. A person with good muscle tone will experience less pain than a person with poor muscle tone.

Woman who was given a Double Mastectomy

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has ordered an American hospital located in Los Angeles, California to pay over $222,000 in settlement fees to a woman who was given a double mastectomy, after which it was discovered that she did not actually suffer from breast cancer.

A patient at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Centre, Ana Jimenez-Salgado underwent a breast cancer screening via a biopsy in 2007. When the results were examined, two independent pathologists concluded that cancer was present and recommended a swift plan of action for her treatment.

Jimenez-Salgado participated in extensive operations to remove both breasts and restructure her chest area to allow for the changes in her bodily appearance. However according to reports, pathologists at County-USC studied the tissue in question following her operations and came to a different conclusion than that of the independent pathologists who had issued the original diagnosis. In actuality, Jimenez-Salgado did not suffer from cancer of the breast at all. Rather, it was found that she was afflicted with a harmless condition whose appearance bore similarities to cancerous cells.

Dismayed by the outcome, Jimenez-Salgado hurriedly filed a malpractice suit against the doctors who had provided her with the original incorrect breast cancer diagnosis, as well as the County-USC physicians who performed her operations. As a result of this situation, County-USC has instituted new regulations which require breast tissue samples that have been obtained from outside facilities to be further examined by county hospitals. Additionally, in an attempted quality control measure, County-USC has halted a previous practice of regularly sending patients to outside medical facilities to receive specific types of biopsies.

Surprisingly, this is not the first case of an inappropriate mastectomy recommendation as treatment for a patient diagnosed with breast cancer. Canada faced a similar problem which began in 2001. According to CBC News, a recent review revealed two cases of mistaken mastectomies. Both occurred at Hotel-Dieu Grace hospital, and were performed by the same physician. Although the first incidence is linked to 2001, the second took place eight years later.

County-USC could not be reached for comment regarding this incident.

These can include bleeding, infections, leaking and abscesses that develop, as well as throwing up, the narrowing of the area between the stomach and small bowels and ulcerations that can occur in these areas too. This is typical when gastric bypass surgery is completed. He noted that since weight loss can be achieved through natural means there is no reason to put one’s self at risk with weight loss surgeries. He continued that people can loose weight by being disciplined and committing to changing. Since nutritional plans and vitamins are needed after weight loss surgery is done, this may as well be completed in the first place and avoid surgery all together.

Lastly, he explained the cost of weight loss surgery is expensive, ranging in price from £5,500 to £15,000. This cost hurts the NHS and the UK economy. Also, that loosing weight naturally is safe. There are reasons why a person is gaining weight, usually because of poor eating habits and being inactive. Doing something now means loosing the weight naturally and permanently.

Improved Post-Op Of Cosmetic Enhancements

Eating well improves and facilitates healing, eating poorly will delay, complicate and inhibit the healing process. This is an important when it comes to treatment. Many patients want to have cosmetic procedures and a speedy recovery as well. Using nutraceuticals are one option to increase the healing process.

Using post surgery nutraceuticals has had promising data in clinical studies. Certain nutraceuticals can assist in speeding up the recovery process, by strengthening the immune system, reducing inflammation and adding support to the dermal repair. They can help to reduce immune deficiencies and the side effects of having surgery done. There are some nutraceuticals that especially help with the healing process.

Protein need is increased when there is a wound or stress. Protein helps with the granulation tissue and also increases collagen and the strength of the collagen.

Arginine is an amino acid and is needed during periods of stress. It is also a part of collagen and it’s strength.

L-Glutamine is also an amino acid and is needed for energy and boosts immunity. It can buffer against acidosis as well.

Super Oxide Dismutase is an antioxidant enzyme and there are advantages to consuming this one over other antioxidants. It is a biological catalyst and can rapidly reduce again and again reactive oxygen.

French Maritime Pine Bark is extracted from pine bark and is proven to be an anti inflammatory agent and has propertied similar to antioxidants. It can increase intracellular production and act at a scavenger of free radicals in the body.

Gotu Kola Seed has been used to treat wounds and skin conditions. The plant can act as a collagen and glycosaminoglycan can synthesizer in the wound.

Zinc and Copper are important in enzymatic reactions, they are needed for the linking of collagen and elastin together. Zinc demand is increased during cell production and protein secretion. Zinc also inhibits bacterial growth.

Vitamin C creates collagen as well and helps with the bond between collagen fibers.

Pre and Probiotics are organisms that provide food and supplements, growth and activity in the microflora. Both of these have shown to increase nutrient absorption, inhibit pathogen growth, increase the immune system and increase regularity.

Breast Lift Surgery Considerations

Breast lift or breast augmentation surgery is a person’s own choice. Breast tissue can be damaged by age, weight, gravity, pregnancy and nursing. A breast lift will firm and raise breasts, while breast augmentation will increase the size and shape of the breasts. Plus there is breast reduction surgery to decrease the size of the breasts.

Many times a combination of procedures need to be done. A breast augmentation and a lift together or a lift and breast reduction can be done to deliver the results a woman is looking for. With any of these procedures there is an examination and evaluation done by the doctor. This ensures that the patient as all the information they need to make an informed decision to have the procedure or not. Any woman considering these procedures should be in optimal health both physically and mentally. There should also be realistic goals and expectations of the results the woman will see after the operation as well.

As with any surgery there are risks associated with it. There can also be complications too. Knowing that there can be infections, increased bleeding, side effects to the anesthesia used and scarring to name a few should be considered as well. While at the consultation with any doctor that has been chosen, the possible complications that can occur should be gone over. All risks that are associated to the procedure should be discussed as well. However, the benefits should be looked at and weighed in as well. These questions should be completely covered in the consultation so that a patient fully understands the pre, during and post surgical results and care.

Having this information will make deciding on to have the procedure much easier, as well as deciding which procedure will best for you. Keep in mind that having a breast lift procedure done will mean that the breasts can be firmed and contours added to sagging breasts. However, combining a lift with breast augmentation will mean that the breasts will be fuller, larger, lifted and firm as well. This is true with breast reductions as well. These combined procedures many times will create longer lasting results that are also more appealing aesthetically.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

BDD or Body Dysmorphic disorder has been crucial in the reality of cosmetic surgery, a disorder that victimizes the subject of concern resulting in the gradual deterioration of the brain functionality. Records have found that more than 2 percent of the human population struggle with this version of mental ailment, the rest being left in the pool are undiagnosed and unaccounted for.

Several characteristics exhibit the presence of BDD in the sufferer such as obsession with appearance that leads one to constantly look in the mirror or totally avoid it , preoccupation with diet and exercise to obtain the dreamt image, frequent thought of suicide over trivial matters, deliberate refrainment from social contacts, unability to persist in a career and/or lead a normal family life, severe addiction to cover up the so called defects with cosmetics and weird outfits, distraction during social gathering or talk, constant quest for reassurances from others etc, that if left untreated cause severe damage to mind and body. It is also evident that the most criticized area of the body the patient finds defect with are the skin, nose and hair although getting frustrated with the body weight is not uncommon. BDD is found to make its impact equally on both men and women irrespective of race and lifestyle.

Living in the evolutionary world where physical appearance and body gestures are a matter of prominence in various fields like film/model industry, cosmetic surgery has been an option to eliminate the irregularities one finds in their body. Most surgeries derive perfect result that would comfort the patient while the rest of them induce what is called the “post-surgery disorders”, an excuse for the already existing BDD.

Scientists and physicians researching in the field of “BDD and its effect” suggest that the patient of concern needs to be subjected to psychiatric treatment instead of the conventional surgical procedure, evading the request from the patient. It is estimated that only 1 percent of the patients who underwent surgery to treat this condition were satisfied with the outcome soon after the surgery while BDD coupled with dissatisfaction remained with the rest and 25 percent of the patients showed slight improvement in the long term. Based on these factual evidences and taking into consideration the post-surgical consequences, therapy and medication are recommended by physicians and psychiatrists as the most promising solution in the long run for Body Dysmorphic disorder.

Not Far Behind Europe

A breast cancer report is good news for the UK and women. Over 20 years now, the death rate from breast cancer has continued to fall rapidly, with a 35% decline in deaths. With the advantage of early diagnosis, surgery, drug treatment and access to specialists has been the key to survival. The UK originally started with the highest death rate in the world in the 80′s and it has decreased dramatically. However, many women would have survived had they lived somewhere else in Europe.

The death rate in Britain has decreased to the European rate of 28.1 deaths for every 100,000 women afflicted. However, the Netherlands is already at 30.1 and France is at 25.6. A researcher by the name of Philippe Autier that is part of the International Agency for Research on Cancer feels that England will continue to decrease the death toll and could go below France’s levels.

Britain has seen a 2% decrease in the death toll and this is better than France which has a 1.4% rate. However, France has the highest rate of screening for breast cancer in the world. They spend the most on cancer drugs per person than any other country and they ensure that doctors are following guidelines and procedures when it comes to breast cancer. They have been at the very front when it comes to new drugs and treatments available for breast cancer as well. This means that France needs to look at what is happening and what is going wrong with the breast cancer death rate not dropping more significantly.

The numbers have helped to clear up why the breast cancer death rate is still so poor in the UK, while the performance has been very good. A reason may be that the deaths from breast cancer are recorded, but cancer survival cases are not. These shortcomings create an impression of a far worse situation then there really is.

Furthermore, ageism is still a problem in UK and Europe. The death rate has declined in every country with women under 50, than women over 70. The reason may be that younger women respond better to treatment, even when the cancer is more aggressive. However, women over 70 also do not receive the same treatment or concern that younger woman do.
