A couple’s attempts to make love ended quite shamefully mere weeks after the birth of their child due to the fact that the woman’s vagina had been changed so dramatically. It wasn’t just their love life that she had been having trouble with. She had trouble wearing jeans and simply walking began to cause friction and pain. Soon afterward, the two went to a general practitioner who diagnosed her with a uterine prolapse. What this essentially meant was that her bowel could be felt just behind the damaged vaginal walls. The doctor offered her a hysterectomy, but this operation was refused. Because she felt so poorly about her own, body she and her husband began to drift apart.

She began researching methods of vaginal surgery when she saw an advert for a television programme about image problems. She contacted the producers right away and met a surgeon who told her that she would be able to benefit from labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. Because they could not afford to pay for the operations themselves, they took this opportunity immediately.

In a 90 minute operation in London, surgeons both reinforced the vaginal wall and placed her womb back in the correct position. She was then told to not have sex for the next six weeks. Although she felt tender, her body felt more complete than it had in a long time. She went on to say that it seems as if more women are having the operation because it is at last an issue that can be spoken about out in the open.

This type of case is quite rare because the labia usually does not cause medical problems. This typically only happens after a child is delivered and the mother needs to be sutured. There are plenty of women who want this operation that haven’t even had children. These women are simply looking for cosmetic surgery because they are not satisfied with the way that their vaginas look. Medical experts urge these women to look at this issue more realistically. The perfect-looking vaginas that they are looking at in magazines are probably aided by digital imagery. They may be searching for something that is not achievable. Experts will make the claim that there are no standards for normalcy in this situation. If surgeons do not see an immediate medical issue, they will not operate and patients are urged to see general practitioners for counselling.

The importance of appearance for dating and mating, particularly for women, points to another domain apart from the stereotype about age and facial wrinkles. There is overwhelming evidence that attractiveness influences woman’s romantic experiences. Although some aspects of attractiveness, such as preferences for perfect body weight, shape and measurements are culturally constructed, many other requirements may be biologically and psychologically constructed and connected to physical and mental health. One such standard that seems to evaluate attractiveness in women in the modern world is the appearance of private parts.

Genital cosmetic surgery on women has increased as much as other cosmetic procedures and more physicians are now offering procedures to enhance genital features. As the attitudes toward these procedures are increasingly favorable and pretty pleases in personal relationships, genital cosmetic surgery has provided individuals bothered by their genital appearance a solution, and researcher such as one from Macquarie University is hoping to find the exact reason for motivation behind the decision to undergo these surgeries, despite any significant illness.

Plastic surgeons and other physicians involved with cosmetic procedures are packing various conferences and surveys to learn more about lesbians and straight women who opt for genital cosmetic surgery. Anthropology PhD student Lindy McDougall who is conducting an Australia-wide study regarding this, is urging women to participate in surveys and take her research to a significant step further based on the survey result. She gathered information from doctors which indicate that when lesbians have surgery, usually both girls agree with the decision, while hetero women do the “correction” to improve their self-esteem and doesn’t involve their partner’s approval. According to her, higher levels of attractiveness achieved through cosmetic surgery are associated with higher levels of life satisfaction, a more positive and balanced affect, and a substantial impact after marriage, but for a woman to decide on labiaplasty and vaginal tightening, the reason is much complex than that.

Although not well understood, genital cosmetic surgery among women can be a means of achieving favoritism with current or potential partners, and some regard the surgery as a tool to assert some control over their visible signs of aging, especially for single women who face an increasingly tight “dating and marriage market” as they age. As a matter of fact, plastic surgery in this field has come a long way since practitioners engaged in cosmetic work catered basically to celebrities, professional beauties and upper-class women, overcoming ethical dilemmas.

For many women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, the potential loss of their breasts through mastectomy, which is an oftentimes life saving procedure, can prove intimidating and daunting. However, a new and rarely performed procedure known as nipple sparing mastectomy, may allow some patients to keep portions of their breasts despite the presence of multiple breast tumours that are widespread throughout the tissue.

Iraqi national Basma Ali Sultan, age 47 is one of the recent patients who has undergone this rare surgery. After grappling with her diagnosis and consistent discomfort in her breast for over a year following her breast cancer diagnosis last march, the doctors in her hometown in Iraq informed her that her only option was to remove the breast in its entirety.

In an effort to explore other options that would allow her to keep her breast, Basma traveled to India and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Anil Heroor, who is currently a cancer surgeon at Fortis Hospital. During her examination Dr. Heroor determined that due to multiple cancerous tumours located in her left breast, the breast conservation surgery that is most often performed would not be applicable in Basmas case. However, he thought she would be an excellent candidate for nipple sparing mastectomy, which is a breast conservation surgery that is specifically designed to work around tumours that have spread widely throughout the breast tissue, and, for many patients, it may help to maintain nipple sensitivity.

Basma was discharged from Fortis Hospital in India this past January following her nipple sparing mastectomy, through which the doctors were able to save both the nipple and the areola, and reconstruct the remainder of the entire breast. As the breast cancer survival rates climb, more patients than ever before are becoming concerned with preserving their physical appearance. Doctors have found that this helps to encourage their self esteem and self image, and increases the patients confidence post-surgery.

For more and more women, this surgery in addition to other breast conservation procedures are becoming a feasible option in helping women maintain the body that they had prior to their breast cancer diagnosis.

According to a recent survey, a full one-third of middle-aged women would gladly resort to surgical techniques to mask the visible facial signs of aging!

Three thousand women from 40 to 65 years of age revealed that one out of every three of these women would contemplate cosmetic surgery to achieve a more-youthful appearance. Nearly one-third of the women also told the surveyors that they found the prospect of looking two decades younger held more appeal to them than becoming a millionaires!

Among those willing to undergo the knife to turn back the clock, the most favored cosmetic corrective procedure was an eyelift. Following closely behind in the ladies’ preferred baggy of surgical “tricks” was the tummy tuck.

Close to another one third of the research subjects preferred non-surgical techniques such as chemically-based facial “peels” or “fillers”. Botox was one such frequently-mentioned “filler”. Botox is a prescription drug that is administered intramuscularly between the eyebrows. According to its makers, Botox reduces wrinkles by obstructing certain facial nerve impulses. Botox claims that this decreases the muscular activity that cause certain types of lines to develop in women‘s faces. Among the women questioned, Botox – along with its topical counterparts – was preferred over the drastic measure of resorting to the plastic surgeon’s scalpel.

David Ross is Chief Executive at one of the UK’s most elite cosmetic surgery facilities. Known as The Hospital Group, this medical organization provides those with serious concern about their appearance a full range of surgical and non-surgical remedies. Breast enlargement, eye lifts, liposuction, and facelifts are provided alongside chemical peels, fillers, Botox, and cosmetic dentistry. The Group performs these services in nineteen clinics throughout Ireland and the UK.

Mr. Ross recently remarked: “The way you look matters to many people, no matter what their age is. If you feel unhappy with your appearance, this can lead to feelings of frustration and depression.

“For many people, changing the way they look can improve their whole view on life, and often gives them the confidence that they didn’t have before, as well.

The Hospital Group provides expert advice and treatments to ensure that patients get the look they are after.”

From all appearances, the cosmetics industry is cashing in big amid on all this age-induced hysteria. Amidst the hype and hoopla, one can only wonder: Is being so vane all in vain?

There is a new style of breast implants on the market. The interesting thing about this style is that they have been designed to address the common major issues of traditional styles such as ruptures and contraction.

Breast Implants and Enlargement has been dated back to 1890. The original procedure involved injecting paraffin directly into the breast. In the 1920′s paraffin was replaced with fat from other parts of the body. Then during the time of WWII silicon was discovered and ladies of the night began to have silicon put directly into the breast. Later in the 1950′s, silicon impregnated sponges were placed in the breast. In 1961 the very first implant was introduced, made from silicon.

The silicon breast implant was not designed to last forever. There has always been a limit to the amount of time that it can stay in the body before it needs to be removed and replaced. However, there have been cases of the implants dissolving, leaking, rupturing and contracting before their expiration date. This has been a common concern for both patients and doctors.

When silicone implants rupture, common side effects are decreased or uneven breast size, pain, tingling, hard knots, burning, and increased swelling. Sometimes however, no side effects are experienced and this can lead to other complications.

With trends in breast surgeries increasing, Cereform decided to look into a new way to manufacture breast implants. Cereform realized that “Women are more and more willing to have a natural augmentation.” Many women find a natural appearance to be more important than size or lift. With that in mind, many surgeons have started placing the implant under the muscle instead of under the gland.

Silicone implants have become the more common choice for women because of the natural appearance that they give, especially when compared to Saline. Silicone is also a safer material.

“The most important issue for breast implants as with every medical implant is biocompatibility. In aesthetic breast surgery there is always a small risk of capsular formation, a so called hostile reaction of the native tissue with scar formation around the implant.”

The texture of Cereform’s implants was designed to overcome all of the issues with its predecessors by changing the texture. “Our implants are textured by automotive ways and it is the combination of texturation and different layers of Cereform implants that makes it innovative.”

It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, women of all ages are lining up for the latest procedure in cosmetic surgery. Lip and cheek enhancements are becoming a very popular trend. For many getting their lips in perfect condition for a special event is becoming a necessity. Not only are the young looking for perfect lips but also older women wanting to look their best are seeking lip enhancement procedures.

Many cosmetic surgeons are seeing as many as 10 women a day in their clinics for lip enhancements. Most of the women coming in for procedure have a celebrity in mind they wish to look like but many also are requesting cheek enhancements. Cheek enhancements are seen by many as making their face look more beautiful and compliment their lips.

As the request for these procedures increase, many clinics and physicians are offering them as a one-time appointment, triggering even more interest in them. Clinics are also offering payment plans to pay for the procedures in monthly installments, making these procedures more affordable for those who may not have considered this as an option for them in the past.

One very popular time of year to get lip enhancements is the New Year. Often times this is when many people make resolutions and some want to make a change which alters their appearance. Some attribute the popularity of lip and cheek enhancement to making a person’s overall appearance look more beautiful without altering other parts of their body. The other reason New Year’s is a popular time of year to have lip enhancements done is because of the ever so important New Year’s kiss!

With the use of dermal fillers, lip enhancements are visible within one day. This is very popular for those wanting to make an impression quickly. It is highly recommended that when going for these procedures a licensed cosmetic professional is used and be sure the fillers used are US FDA approved. Some fillers can cause damage to the face and may be dangerous.

Lip enhancing procedures can have lasting effects anywhere from six months to two years depending on the type of filler that is used. Once the enhancement fades another procedure can be done. The prices of these procedures vary; so checking ahead with providers on their rates will give clients the best idea of how much they will spend for the various procedures.

It is that time of year again. Resolutions for the beginning of the New Year; amongst the top are lose weight, eat healthy and as always quit smoking and start a daily exercise routine.

These new promises to yourself may improve your life however, use caution as these new routines and habits may have adverse effects on your skin.

What should you do when beginning these new resolutions to keep your skin healthy and gorgeous? Dr. Jennifer Linder a Board Certified Dermatologist has five great tips to following to maintain your beautiful skin as you improve the rest of your body and mind.

Tip #1
Quitting Smoking.

Smokers tend to give their skin a beating with the affects of the toxins in cigarettes. Smoking constricts the blood vessels which causes the smokers skin to sag, dull and increase the look of older age. The most promising way to save ones skin according to Dr. Linder is to quit smoking. The results will quickly surprise the ex smoker as within days as the blood vessels will open up and bring back that natural glow.

Tip #2
Workouts and Breakouts

Starting a workout is great! Be aware that this new activity will bring out new reactions with your body that may not always been good. As the inches shed the acne may increase. To prevent this from occurring Dr. Linder suggests that to maintain a fresh face to keep moisture-wicking clothing and to shower right after you work out. Products that contain sulfur and salicylic acid will reduce breakouts as well.

Tip #3
Start and Stick to your Skin Routine

With everything there needs to be a time of adjustment. Skin needs that time too. When beginning a new skin care routine remember that the skin is adjusting to new ingredients that it is not familiar with. Breakouts that occur are usually called purging and tend to clear up after a short time. To keep the best results maintain the new skin care routine for 28 days.

Tip #4
Sunscreen is your friend all year round

Even if you don’t work outdoors wear sunscreen. Dr. Linder advises that indoor workers do not realize that a sun’s UV rays can filer through clouds and glass. By applying sunscreen daily it provides protection from the harmful UV rays that sneak up.

Tip #5
Superficial Chemical Peels provide Positive Results

Despite all the horror stories circulating around the chemical peel industry. Dr. Linder suggests a superficial chemical peel during the cold and cool seasons. A gentle exfoliation of the skin can minimize the hyper pigmentation, acne breakout and aging.

Women who have just giving birth are more and more using laser treatment as a means to get rid of stretch marks. Cosmetic surgery clinics are reporting that they are giving the treatment 33% more than just 3 months ago.

While many of of the laser surgeries are being done because of rapid weight gain and loss due to pregnancy, there are also other women who are getting these procedures due to weight gain and loss earlier in life. Also, there has been an increase in the number of men seeking procedures, although nowhere near as large an increase as with women.

One such clinic that just opened in May is amazed at how many people are wanting the laser surgery treatment. This clinic, called the Harley Medical Group, says they are getting over 400 people calling in to inquire about this procedure every week. Director Liz Dale talked about how easy this procedure is, which may have something to do with its’ increasing popularity. Another factor that could be making laser surgery more popular is the massive exposure that it is getting in the media. Clinics have also stepped-up advertising for these procedures as they continue to gain in popularity. The only recovery issue is a slight redness for a few days. She also said that 75% of females getting the laser procedure are doing so post-pregnancy for rapid weight-loss stretch marks.

Older women are also increasingly asking for laser surgery in record numbers. Other procedures that seem to be gaining in popularity are laser hair removal and non-surgical skin treatments. They have seen a similar rise in inquiries from women 50 and over.

Liz Dale did go on to say that surgeries are still a lot more popular than laser treatments, but that that could change someday.

The surgeries that are most popular have not changed in years; the most popular in order are: breast jobs, nose jobs, liposuction followed by stomach tucks. For males the order is: nose jobs followed by liposuction. As more and more celebrites bring the different cosmetic procedures into the public eye, the gains in popularity should continue far into the future.

Many women each year consider breast surgery. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is chosen by many women because of its ability to alter appearance as well as its added health benefits. Many women will experience neck, back, and shoulder pain because of the added weight of large breasts. Having breast reduction surgery can alleviate these problems in most women. Other women seek to improve their visual image because their breasts are disproportionate to other features of their bodies. This surgery can improve self esteem and self confidence just as much as breast augmentation can.

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and it is very important to make sure that a potential patient chooses a surgeon who is certified, experienced, professional, and maintains a clean office environment. It is also a good idea to research surgeons online. Looking at what past clients have to say is a very helpful way to check on the effectiveness of a surgeon. Surgeons should be accredited and have licenses to practice medicine. Many surgeons offer free consultations so it is advised that potential patients visit several doctors before deciding on the one that will perform their breast reduction surgery.

Potential candidates for surgery will meet with their surgeon and have their breasts examined and measured. The surgeon will also take a detailed medical history. Women who are approved for surgery usually has one or more conditions that are caused by their breasts. These conditions include: back, neck or shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts, irritation beneath the breasts, damage to the shoulders because of tight bra straps, breasts that are out of proportion to the body frame, restriction of physical activity because of the weight of the breasts, and self consciousness because of the size of the breasts.

Breast reduction surgery is most often done as an outpatient procedure and unless the patient’s job requires heavy lifting, they can return to their normal work schedule in about two weeks.

Many insurance companies cover breast reduction surgery. Each policy has specific guidelines about what surgeries they cover and the amount of tissue that can be removed based on body weight. Patients will have to work out the specifics with their surgeon and insurance companies. Letters of predetermination may be required in order for the insurance company to approve the surgery.

A majority of women who have breast reduction surgery are satisfied with the experience and happy to live without the pain and discomfort of large breasts.

Fat grafting is a way to enlarge breasts by up to one cup size without introducing an artificial substance into the body. Fat is removed from fat deposits in the body such as the hips, abdomen, and thighs and placed someplace else in order to plump that area up. Traditionally this procedure has been used to smooth wrinkles and to plump the lips and cheeks. Recently, however, cosmetic surgeons have begun to use this procedure in breast augmentations. This is a new procedure and there are not a lot of safety statistics that have been done. Physicians are still conducting research on the fat grafting procedure.

A newer technique, fat grafting with stem cells, allows for the fat taken from other parts of the body to be enriched with stem cells before it is used to augment the breasts. The added stem cells allow for the fat to be retained by the body, therefore, increasing the breast size.

Recent studies show that the risks for this procedure are generally very low. Reported side effects include infection, bleeding, and volume loss. Cases of extreme complications causing death are extremely rare.

There are many different advantages to choosing this procedure for breast augmentation. Many doctors believe that this procedure provides longer lasting results than traditional breast implants. Also, since the breast is being augmented with fat from the patient’s own body, there is a lower chance for the body rejecting it like with traditional silicone transplants.

While many medical professionals consider this procedure to have a lot of potential, but there are still some limitations. The first is that it only allows for an augmentation of up to one cup size unlike current synthetic implants. Synthetic implants are also very predictable in how much they will increase the breast size, whereas fat grafting is still relatively unpredictable in what the final outcome will be. Some medical professionals only believe that fat grafting should be used for breast reconstruction only. Others professionals are concerned that the fat grafted into the breast could calcify and obscure breast cancer detection. Each calcified area would have to be individually checked to rule out the possibility of breast cancer. There are even more concerns that women at risk for breast cancer may have the increased possibility of breast cancer if they use the stem cell method. Many doctors agree that fat grafting for breast augmentation is not right for everyone.
