Chin Implants the Latest Cosmetic Surgery Trend

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of chin implant procedures carried out in the USA increased by 71 percent between 2010 and 2011, which represented a larger increase in popularity than breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox combined. The most significant increase was among people aged between 40 and 54.

Why are chin implants so popular?

An American plastic surgeon has claimed that social media and the increased popularity of video calling have increased the popularity of chin implants.

Dr William J Vasileff, from the Birmingham Institute of Plastic Surgeons, said that surgeons across Michigan have experienced a significant increase in the number of people seeking chin implant treatment, which they have attributed to an increase in video calling, which has prompted people to take notice of their profile and notice flaws in their appearance.

Dr Vasileff also said that people from the baby boom generation are eager to compete with their younger counterparts and are resorting to surgery to achieve more youthful, attractive looks. Chin implant procedures are particularly popular with male models, who are keen to have the treatment to produce a more chiselled look and a strong jaw line, which are incredibly popular in the world of modelling at the moment.

About chin implants

Chin implants are designed to increase the size of the chin; the procedure is also known as chin augmentation. Implants are placed under the skin in the chin to make the chin more prominent. The aim of the procedure is to balance the facial features and create a more attractive profile. If you have a small chin, for example, this may make your nose look bigger, so chin implants will help to bring the size of the nose into balance.

Dr Vasileff also noted that many patients are choosing to combine chin implant procedures with rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job. According to the Michigansurgeon, altering the appearance and shape of both the nose and the chin has a dramatic effect on the aesthetic of the profile, as well as the appearance of the face from the front.

Plastic Surgery for Teens on the Rise

Self-esteem and self-confidence are not ageist. They do not discriminate and the old and young alike are subject to low levels of self-worth. Sometimes they are the result of physical aesthetic imperfections, and correcting these imperfections surgically used to be a luxury reserved only for adults who could afford the costly procedures. However, there is a recent trend in teenagers and young adults seeking medical interventions for their unhappiness.

In the United States, plastic surgery procedures on young people between thirteen and nineteen years old has been qualified as “mainstream” and the spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Frederick Lukash, estimates that almost three hundred thousands teenagers went under the knife in 2008. Those numbers have only increased in the following years.  Essentially, teenagers are hoping that the procedures will “cure” whatever issues they are suffering from but they should be warned that it is unlikely. This idea typically plagues the psyches of young women in the midst of development. They are excessively exposed to unrealistic depictions of perfection and define their worth in terms in physical ideals. Moreover, in the never-ending quest for societal approval, these imperfections are magnified, appearing both intolerable yet easily resolved with a breast enhancement or a rhinoplasty.

Plastic surgery for teens is not always wrong. Dr. Lukash has seen many cases where a teenaged patient’s quality of life has improved exponentially because of a procedure. But he warns that surgery on a teenaged patient should be the exception, not the rule. He wrote “The Safe and Sane Guide to Teenage Plastic Surgery” to aid parents and potential patients about the risks and concerns of surgery. If a teenager is seriously considering plastic surgery, they should first talk to a therapist. Low self-esteem levels could be the result of underlying issues and the opinion of a therapist could be beneficial before putting oneself through a painful and expensive procedure with an undesirable result.

Furthermore, if a teenaged patient decides to go ahead with the procedure, it is of the utmost importance that they seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon. Doctors should not be concerned with the money that the patient represents, but with genuinely improving their quality of life. A consultation is a two-way interview and the surgeon should not be afraid to turn a patient away if their expectations are not manageable. There are always risks with any surgery and it is irresponsible to take on such a risk without proper research and the guidance of qualified and trusted medical professionals.

Choosing The Right Cosmetic Surgeon

Dr. Paul Angelchik is a cosmetic surgeon in Phoenix Arizona. His goal for each of his patients is to find the right procedure for them and then use his skill and experience to give them the look that they desire. He does, however, understand that not all surgeons have these goals. And so, Dr. Angelchik wrote a press release to give people an outline to follow when choosing a plastic surgeon.

He says, “When choosing the right plastic surgeon, there are many things to consider. After all, you usually do not get more than one chance to improve your appearance with plastic surgery or minimally invasive cosmetic treatments.” He divides the choice into four specific things to look for when choosing a plastic
surgeon. These are education, associations, experience, and vision.

A plastic surgeon is required to do years of specialty training after medical school. When choosing a plastic surgeon, a person wants to be sure that they are well educated and trained for the procedure. A good surgeon will not only rely on what he learned in school. He will also keep abreast of new techniques and
technologies that are becoming available. Finding out about a doctor’s education is as simple as asking them about it or checking on it via the internet.

There are many plastic surgery associations that a doctor can be a member of. In the UK two of the most prestigious associations are the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and The Harley Medical Group. In the US the major association is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). A surgeon should be certified to practice plastic surgery, operate an accredited facility, attend continuing education programs and also follow a strict code of conduct. Many associations require at least these things of their surgeons and most require more. It can be important to know what certificates and awards a surgeon might have, as well as other associations or fellowships that the surgeons is a member of. A surgeon’s charitable contributions is also a good way to gauge his or her character.

The experience of a plastic surgeon is gauged by a few things. The number of years in practice is important but a decision cannot be made based solely on this. Research should be done to determine if any newsworthy problems ever occurred in association with the doctor. These negative news stories should not weigh too heavily on a decision however they should not be ignored. Talking to people who have actually been patients of a surgeon is usually a good way to gauge his or her experience.

The vision of a plastic surgeon is a true test of the surgeon. He or she should be able to give you specific goals concerning your procedure and be able to meet these goals. During the patient interview the surgeon should be able to outline the procedure and make the patient feel comfortable and at ease.

Surgeons Prefer Liposuction For Themselves

Plastic surgeons perform millions of procedures around the world. These procedures include invasive surgeries such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. They also perform non-invasive surgeries such as botox and face lifts. When asked what surgeries these surgeons have underwent themselves, liposuction was a popular response.

The Plastic Surgery Channel reported that the American Society of Plastic surgeons performed a survey on some of its members. It reported that, of the 276 members surveyed, 62 percent had undergone procedures themselves. Most of them had undergone noninvasive procedures such as botox injections, laser skin resurfacing, and chemical peels. The Cosmetic Surgery Review said that there were more female surgeons who had opted for these non-invasive surgeries than male surgeons. However, the survey did reveal that a higher percentage of male surgeons underwent cosmetic procedures than men in the rest of society.

The most popular surgical procedures among these plastic surgeons were liposuction and breast enhancement procedures. In fact, more than 30 percent of the surgeons reported that they had opted for invasive procedures. This figure is not as high as the percentages for the general public, however it is encouraging. The fact that surgeons are willing to undergo their own procedures allows them to be a walking advertisement for plastic surgery.

Liposuction is a very popular procedure throughout the world. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that there were 3,509 liposuction procedures performed on men and women in the UK during 2009. This means that nearly one in ten procedures done in the UK are liposuction surgeries. This procedure is popular because it can be applied in many areas on the body, to tighten them up and give the body a more streamlined look.

Liposuction procedures are quick, usually taking between 20 and 30 minutes. It is a procedure that removes pockets of fat from problem areas on the body. It is done by using a suction tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into a small incision and then it is pushed and pulled through the fat cells. This pushing and pulling breaks up the fat cells, allowing them to be sucked out of the body. The results are amazing and many people have learned this fact for themselves.

This survey will surely make people more comfortable with choosing to have plastic surgical procedures. Knowing that many plastic surgeons choose to undergo the same procedures they perform may raise the confidence of prospective patients.

For a Natural Look : Silicone Implants

Many women are not satisfied with the way that their breasts look. Most would like them to be bigger and thus they consider having breast augmentation surgery. This particular plastic surgical procedure has remained the most popular procedure for many years and is most likely to stay in the number one position for many more. Of the different choices of implants most women would agree that the silicone implant feels the most natural.

Brian Braithwaite, a board-certified surgeon and active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said, “The majority of my breast augmentation patients choose silicone implants…. My patients are extremely happy with their silicone implants and do not regret choosing silicone over saline.” Dr. Braithwaite, himself, believes that silicone implants are indeed better than saline, however he presents
both of the types objectively to his patients. After feeling the example that he offers them, during the consultation, most women choose the silicone without prompting.

Silicone implants have a more natural feel to them. They are made with a silicone plastic cover filled with silicone gel. Saline implants also use a silicone plastic shell but are filled with a saline solution instead. The silicone gel has been continuously improved to make it feel more natural. It is very soft and has a smooth texture. The gel has a property that allows it to ‘stick’ to itself thus the implant is similar to tissue cells that ‘stick’ to each other. Many women say that the saline implant feels more like a water balloon than a breast.

Not only are women choosing silicone implants for their breast augmentation but they are also trading in their saline implants for the better silicone ones. Dr. Braithwaite said of those women who switched, “To date. all ‘my’ patients have been very pleased with their decisions and no patient has had any regrets about the switch to silicone. Virtually all these patients are amazed by the improved look and feel of their new implants.” Switching to silicone seems to have made a lot of women more satisfied with their breast augmentation.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, 8,537 UK women underwent breast augmentation in 2009. This makes up nearly 26 percent of all surgical procedures. 2010 will surely have a large number of breast augmentations as well. Women who want a soft natural feel for their implant are advised to choose silicone, but surely they will figure that out for themselves by merely touching the
samples.

Plastic Surgery May Make Older Women More Successful

Seventy-three percent of the females surveyed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said that they believe that looking younger will help a woman to be more successful. Though many powerful women believe that their positions are safe, in many fields keeping a young appearance is nearly as important as that power.

Eileen Bradbury is a consultant psychologist and told the Guardian that nearly every person that has been referred to her, says that their greatest motivator in seeking plastic surgery is getting older. Cosmetic procedures can leave an older woman looking much younger and feeling more confident. Some of these women get a face lift or lip lifts. Others get brow lifts or eyelid surgery. Wrinkles can be removed,
loose skin tightened, and sagging features lifted.

The Guardian reported that Miriam O’Rielly and her three colleagues were removed form their rural affairs broadcast on the BBC. The show was moved to a peak-time slot and the producers decided to remove the older women from the show to replace them. These four women are indeed not the only ones who have been shoved out of their positions to be replaced by younger looking women. In order to compete in the
work place women must look younger.

Looking throughout the rest of society it is very clear that older looking women are nearly non-existent in the media. News broadcasters are expected to be young and attractive. Billboard models are almost never older women. Even women in important positions in large companies are expected to look good. Many women as young as 40 years old seek out cosmetic surgery to keep their youthful looks and stay competitive in the career field.

Older women who have turned to plastic surgery to adopt a younger look are impressed with the results. They find that they receive more attention at work and have an edge in the competition for positions. They have all the experience that age accumulates without all the wrinkles.

Rejuvenating Job Prospects

Ok, so you’ve got a degree. First class you say?  From Oxford? With two years work experience in a relevant field? You did a gap year embarking on some selfless eco-tourism in Africa?

Even if you answer yes to all these questions above, there may still be one thing lacking, one thing which is stopping you from getting out of the herd and being a front-runner, your appearance. It may sound superficial and more than a little harsh but, in these testing economic times more and more professionals are going under the knife to help them make it in the cut-throat world of business.

Business, like any other industry these days, is obsessed with youth and thus older workers and finding that they need to turn back the clock in order to help them compete with younger applicants who they may be competing with for a job. The solution has come along in the form of cosmetic and plastic surgery. People are beginning to realise that their image can be a valuable market asset which can help them secure that much needed promotion or, in some cases, just keep their job secure at all.

The Los Angeles-based surgeon Payman Simoni commented on the story to Reuters, saying that “plastic surgery has become a necessity for some. People cannot only rely on their skills in this market. They want to look refreshed and youthful so they can compete for jobs.” Before the recession, plastic surgery was almost a frivolity, a way for people to inject (excuse the pun) a little more fun into their lives, now it if a necessity, a matter of survival in the business world.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently carried out a survey to try and back this trend up with hard data. Even they were probably surprised by what they found.  Nearly 75% of those asked said that a youthful appearance was important and that it helped people secure jobs in tough economic climates. This data should send out the message that qualifications and a good C.V will oftentimes not be enough. Young professionals need to keep their jobs by keeping their appearances as fresh and rejuvenated as possible, older professionals need to compete with their younger colleagues and counterparts by fighting back against aging. Much of business involves risk; your appearance is one thing you should definitely bank on.
