Grammy Awards Showcase Cosmetic Surgery

Though plastic surgery has grown in popularity, to encompass the common man and woman, the rich and famous are continuing to benefit from these procedures. People in the entertainment industry, especially, find that they can be more successful if they look their best. Many times looking their best means having some plastic surgery. The 2010 Grammy Awards showcased a wide range of celebrity cosmetic surgery results.

Many of the music business’s biggest stars attended the Grammy award ceremony and used their beauty to mesmorize the crowds. According to the plastic surgery website ,Make Me Heal, quite a few of the stars in attendance owed their dazzling affectations to plastic surgery. Among these were, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Fergie.

The Best Female Pop Vocal Performer, Beyonce has been rumored to have had a few cosmetic procedures to maintain that impressive look. Breast augmentation and possibly liposuction are on this list of surgeries. Plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn has said of Beyonce, “It does appear that her nose has been thinned to look more elegant. It matches her face well, is not overdone, and overall looks great. She has extraordinary grace in front of the camera.” Many young girls and women idolize the poise that Beyonce has and will turn to cosmetic surgery to try to match it.

Mary J. Blige stood out dramatically in her pink (fuchsia) dress at the Grammy awards. The 39 year old hip hop queen’s dress had a cutout which displayed her prominent breast implants. Her implants were not nearly as obvious, before she had lost a substantial amount of weight, now the tightness of her skin displays the shape of the implants very distinctly. The criticism that she once received because of her implants has diminished due to societies continually growing acceptance of cosmetic surgical procedures.

Lady Gaga, at 23 years old, won the award for best dance recording, for her song Poker Face. A fitting song to showcase her nose job and possible breast implants. Dr. Paul S. Nassil, a member of the California Society of Facial Plastic Surgery and rhinoplasty specialist, said, “Lady GaGa definitely had a rhinoplasty. It looks a little pinched, but not bad.”

Of all the celebrities gathered at the Grammy awards Black Eyed Peas singer, Fergie, is rumored to have had the most cosmetic procedures. Sources say that throughout her life she may have had, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, endoscopic brow lift, Botox injections, chin implants and cheek implants. Dr. Michael Salzhauer, a Miami plastic surgeon says , “Fergie look’s amazing at the 2010 Grammy’s. Compared to a year ago, her face seems softer and more rejuvenated. I suspect that she had some great skin care such as chemical peels and a touch of botox to give her face that flawless glow.”

Wave Away Those Wrinkles With The Aluma Magic Wand

Botox has been the popular way to get rid of wrinkles and frown lines in the face for a while. A simple injection is able to relax the clenched facial muscle to create smoother skin. Chemical peels have commonly been used to smooth out facial skin and there are even more invasive procedures which include face lifts. But now there is a new procedure that can create these results easier and more effectively.

London medical has begun providing Aluma treatments. Aluma is made by Lumines Aesthetic and it employs the revolutionary radio frequency technology. This treatment conveys energy into the underlying layers of skin and stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen helps the skin to stay elastic and smooth. This treatment requires no cutting and is painless, without the use of anesthetic. This treatment is designed to be used on anyone with mild to moderate wrinkles and is not restricted to any skin types. It is typically used on the neck, and studies have shown that it may be efficient when used on the abdomen, knees, and arms.

The treatment at London Medical can be used on the face and neck areas and is performed by trained nurses. It is offered under the guidance of recognized consultant dermatologists and is very safe and efficient. The treatment normally last around 15 minutes and requires no recovery time or special care. Patients can get rid of wrinkles on their lunch break and then return to work. The effect of this procedure is considered to be long-lasting. Eventually age will catch back up with a person and wrinkles will start to reform but it is not considered to be temporary like Botox.

Another treatment offered at London Medical, that uses radiofrequency assisted technology, is the Bodytite liposuction procedure. This procedure uses a much higher amount of energy to create a heat that liquefies the fat cells which are then sucked out of the body. The heating also allows for collagen contraction which tightens the surrounding skin.

Getting rid of wrinkles when they begin is a dream come true for some people. Most people want to fight of the signs of aging any way that they can. Now, with Aluma treatments, wrinkles can be smoothed out and skin made to look tighter and smoother. These treatments are quick and painless and the results are amazing. Aluma could be the future of skin tightening procedures.

Chemical Peels: Popularity Soaring

There are many different types of cosmetic procedures and they are divided into two categories: surgical and non surgical. Surgical procedures include breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Non-surgical procedures include accent laser treatment, Botox, and collagen injections. A non-surgical procedure that is becoming more and more popular is chemical peels.

The Press Association reports that chemical peels have actually become more popular than face lifts. The number of chemical peels performed in 2009 was three times the procedures performed the previous year. The Harley Medical Group’s Obagi Blue Peel is a treatment which gets rid of blemishes, acne scars, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, and wrinkles. It has been called by some the ‘recessions facelift’ due to
the increased popularity of the treatments. Liz Dale, director of the Harley Medical Group, said, “Non-surgical procedures, which saw big growth last year, have continued to be a strong area for us and now account for 32 percent of all our business.”

Chemical peels are a skin resurfacing procedure, in which the top layer of skin is removed so that the body can replace it with new skin. The new skin will grow back without whatever problem had been on the old skin. There are three different classifications for chemical peels. There are light peels which are basically
exfoliants. Intermediate peels are good for fine lines and superficial hyper pigmentation from sun damage. Deep peels can remove deep lines, medium sized wrinkles, and darker pigmentation. Many people find that they do not need to get a face-lift and are happy to settle for a chemical peel which makes their facial skin
look fresh and young.

In the plastic surgery field chemical peels are indeed increasing in popularity but the most popular cosmetic procedure is still, by far, breast augmentation. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that in 2009 there were a total of 8,565 breast augmentation procedures, in the UK. Studies done in January of 2010 also show that breast augmentation should prove to be the most popular
procedure in 2010. The Press Association reported that 75 percent of breast up lift patients in 2009 were mothers.

Undergoing a plastic surgery procedure can help to make a person look and feel young. Chemical peel are a way for some people to achieve this without a surgical procedure. The popularity of these effective yet non-invasive treatments has been increasing quickly and shows no sign of slowing.

Surgeons Prefer Liposuction For Themselves

Plastic surgeons perform millions of procedures around the world. These procedures include invasive surgeries such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. They also perform non-invasive surgeries such as botox and face lifts. When asked what surgeries these surgeons have underwent themselves, liposuction was a popular response.

The Plastic Surgery Channel reported that the American Society of Plastic surgeons performed a survey on some of its members. It reported that, of the 276 members surveyed, 62 percent had undergone procedures themselves. Most of them had undergone noninvasive procedures such as botox injections, laser skin resurfacing, and chemical peels. The Cosmetic Surgery Review said that there were more female surgeons who had opted for these non-invasive surgeries than male surgeons. However, the survey did reveal that a higher percentage of male surgeons underwent cosmetic procedures than men in the rest of society.

The most popular surgical procedures among these plastic surgeons were liposuction and breast enhancement procedures. In fact, more than 30 percent of the surgeons reported that they had opted for invasive procedures. This figure is not as high as the percentages for the general public, however it is encouraging. The fact that surgeons are willing to undergo their own procedures allows them to be a walking advertisement for plastic surgery.

Liposuction is a very popular procedure throughout the world. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that there were 3,509 liposuction procedures performed on men and women in the UK during 2009. This means that nearly one in ten procedures done in the UK are liposuction surgeries. This procedure is popular because it can be applied in many areas on the body, to tighten them up and give the body a more streamlined look.

Liposuction procedures are quick, usually taking between 20 and 30 minutes. It is a procedure that removes pockets of fat from problem areas on the body. It is done by using a suction tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into a small incision and then it is pushed and pulled through the fat cells. This pushing and pulling breaks up the fat cells, allowing them to be sucked out of the body. The results are amazing and many people have learned this fact for themselves.

This survey will surely make people more comfortable with choosing to have plastic surgical procedures. Knowing that many plastic surgeons choose to undergo the same procedures they perform may raise the confidence of prospective patients.

Chinese Officials Love Cosmetic Surgery Too

When people are constantly in the media, whether it be on TV or in pictures, they want to look their best. Government officials in the western world have availed themselves of cosmetic procedures to maintain those good looks on camera. Now China’s politicians have also decided to embrace the benefits of using plastic surgery.

The Telegraph reported that more then 500 officials of the Chinese government undergo plastic surgery procedures each year. Many of these procedures are performed at the Plastic Surgery Hospital at Beijing’s Union Medical College. A senior surgeon, named Chen Huanran, told Telegraph that China’s politicians want to stand out more, like their Western counterparts. He said, “They want to make sure they have the strong features that government officials are supposed to have.” According to Dr. Chen at least 200 procedures each year are performed on senior members of the government. He denied any claims that members of the current Politburo have had surgical procedures.

These officials may be willing to have procedures done , but they do not want it to be known. Dr. Chen said, “The officials are usually between 40 and 60 years old. They simply want to look younger, but they don’t want others to notice any changes.” They are very secretive about their procedures. Many of the surgeries are performed after hours when the hospital is not open. Some are even held in secret locations
and contact information is merely a telephone number, to create more security. They will use holidays or downtime throughout the day for the procedures.

Plastic surgery has become a huge industry in China and is growing at a rate of 20 percent each year. Dr. Chen told the Telegraph that lots of marketing companies actually give plastic surgery packages as gifts to government officials. It is believed that there are probably over a million cosmetic procedures performed in
China each year. The most popular procedure for officials is eyelid lifts followed closely by other facial reconstruction and rejuvenating enhancements. Botox and fillers for wrinkles have been thoroughly utilized by China’s elite.

The popularity of plastic surgery has indeed spread all over the world and people believe that to stay ahead they must employ this service. Many men and women have undergone procedures to maintain a youthful look and be more marketable in their careers. They believe that looking young is a good way to keep other’s confident of their abilities. China’s officials have obviously come to the same conclusion. They use cosmetic procedures to keep the image that they believe an important person
should have.

Judgmental Attitudes Toward Plastic Surgery Have Lessened

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) released a survey whose results showed that more than seventy percent of the people surveyed believe that society is less judgmental about cosmetic procedures. A breathtaking majority of these US citizens believe that plastic surgery is more accepted than it was five years ago.

Society has quickly become less judgmental about people who have undergone procedures. People who had plastic surgery were at one time considered to be vain and self-absorbed. People believed that plastic surgery was the easy way out and that a person could not truly appreciate their new beauty if they did not work to get it. As these surgeries become more commonplace people have discarded these short-sighted and judgmental views.

Some of the judgment by society was merely due to the fact that only the rich and famous were undergoing plastic surgery. This made people feel like it was just another way for the famous to get their pictures taken. Cosmetic surgery is not as expensive today and many people have more money to spend. These procedures are no longer just for the rich. When a person knows someone close to them that has undergone such a procedure they become less judgmental and more curious.

As these procedures move toward becoming mainstream, society has more information about plastic surgery. When a person sees the abounding positive information concerning cosmetic procedures it is difficult for them to maintain a critical opinion of them. One fifth of the participants in the AACS survey said that the shift in societies opinion toward plastic surgery has encouraged them to consider undergoing a procedure themselves.

The results of the study found that the three most accepted invasive procedures were breast augmentation, face lifts and tummy tucks. Of non-invasive procedures laser hair removal and Botox were the most accepted procedures. Around twenty percent of the participants said that they would consider having a procedure done and people under forty were twice as likely to consider it.

A Lift in Numbers

Plastic Surgery is a global obsession which cuts across all the age strata and yet, when you get down to the specifics of the different types of treatment, we all have stereotypical images in our heads of who we think has what sort of surgery. If you mention ‘facelift’ then one immediately thinks of an ageing Hollywood actress, perhaps in her 50’s or 60’s who is desperately trying to cling onto her career by fighting back against the ageing process. However, new advances and new techniques in the procedure mean that a younger and younger audience is now being attracted to the dramatic procedure.

New York-based plastic surgery practise Profiles and Contours have noted that a younger demographic are enquiring about updating their looks through one of the new variations on the face-lift.  Director of Profiles and Contours, Dr. Mark A Erlich has spoken out about the trend, saying that:
“What we’re seeing right now is a dramatic move away from the idea that a face lift is only effective for older or middle-aged patients. Younger women and men are finding out about newer, smaller-scale procedures, and they are taking advantage of these options to achieve results that look very natural and appropriate.”

Whereas it might have been the over 55’s who previously ventured into the world of facelifts, patients are now coming in who are in their 30’s or 40’s and who are searching for a more permanent way to turn back the clock.  One of the main reasons why such a younger audience is now being attracted to the facelift is that, with new procedures entering the market all the time, the recovery time needed is now nowhere near as grand as it once was. Younger people, who perhaps can’t spare the time which the retired older generation can, can now have facelifts and be back at work looking younger and more energised much quicker.

One of the new, speedier, procedures is called the ‘S-Lift’ and it uses small incisions to reduce the appearance of loose skin and muscle. Because it uses small incisions, recovery times are a lot shorter. As younger people flock towards facelifts perhaps some of the stigma and humour surrounding them will begin to evaporate and more and more people will see them as a more permanent alternative to Botox and collagen facial fillers; that will certainly put a smile on the cosmetic surgery industries face.

Professional Please

Plastic Surgery has rose in popularity exponentially over past decade; it’s now easier and cheaper than ever to go under the knife. However, this rise in popularity has led to many dangerous practises as well; so-called Botox parties and other new fads such as “lunchtime lifts” are leading people into getting surgery which may well not be safe. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has spoken out about the troubling trend as they fear that people will not only get poorer results than they had hoped for but will also risk damaging their health as well. The rise in ‘in-office’ and at-home procedures is partly fuelled by people’s desire for cheaper treatments but, the old adage is certainly true, you do get what you pay for.

Dr. J Peter Rubin has spoken out, saying that: “In the wrong clinical setting, the results may not come close to the promises made in the advertising. What is really indispensible for the best results, however, is not a specific procedure but the judgment of a board certified plastic surgeon who can match the right patient with the best procedure for them.”

Indeed it is certainly true that a procedure is only as good as the person who performs it and, whilst the best surgeons may cost a little extra money, you can’t really put a price on your health or on the perfect appearance which you are striving towards. So far, these branded treatments, such as Lifestyle Lift and Smart Lipo are a phenomenon which has stayed on the other side of the Atlantic but, as the cosmetic industry continues to rapidly expand here in the U.K, how long is it before we too will see this dangerous trend spreading through our offices and other places of work?

It is easy to see why treatments such as these are popular, we all have less time than we used to and are scared to take time out from our jobs in case there isn’t a position open for us when we come back. So, we find surgeries that fit around our schedules and seem like they will take the least amount of time to perform and recover from. This could end up being a literal false economy however if we have to pay a more qualified surgeon to correct mistakes or if we find we have wasted our hard-earned money.

It aint nothing but a family thing

Twins generally like to assert their independence. After spending childhood being dressed the same by parents and having to share birthdays and having to live with always having to share attention, twins generally mark themselves out from each other as they get older. This is what makes this cosmetic surgery story all the more shocking; a pair of twin sisters have spoken out about how they have jointly spent over £60,000 on cosmetic surgery. Amazingly, they both wished to defy the ageing process (as so many of us do) but they also didn’t want the plastic surgery to harm their identity- they have undergone the same procedures at the same time since they were 21 in order that they continue to look identical!

It all started when the twins, Jo and Kerry, went under the knife when they were younger to have nose jobs.  They told the Daily Mail that, because they were so used to doing everything together since they were children that checking into the same clinic for the same surgery just seemed like a natural progression and, at least to them, didn’t seem as strange as some people might first believe it to be.  One of the siblings, Kerry, said:

“It might sound barmy to some to have cosmetic surgery just because your twin is having it, but we would hate to look different, so we had to have the cosmetic surgery together.”

Indeed everybody ages differently; even twins would not be guaranteed to keep their identical looks as they aged. This is because the ageing process can be drastically affected by lifestyle choices, such as smoking or heavy drinking, as well as genetics. By turning to cosmetic surgery as they age (both twins are now 34) the twins can ensure that they both keep their identity without losing their youthful looks.  The £60,000 the twins have so-far spent is only likely to increase as they continue to with their equal obsession in cosmetic surgery. So far they’ve had breast enlargements, Botox and eyelifts and keep their identical look flowing with matching hair extensions and clothes. It’s a look which is certainly going to get positive male attention from them and it highlights the huge advances in cosmetic surgery over the last few years. If two women can undergo the same procedure to look the same then it really shows the consistency doctors can now achieve.

Don’t DIY

If we had endless supplies of money there are probably lots of surgeries we would all like to have. But this being the real world, and the recession to boot, we simply stick with the procedures we want the most or the ones which we think will be most beneficial to us in the long run. We may even begin to look abroad for cheaper surgeries or opt for companies who have special offers on. One idea which would probably, and thankfully, never occur to us is to simply perform the procedure ourselves! However, as outlandish as this sounds, it’s what one woman from California has done.

Ironically, the woman is now having to undergo proper reconstructive surgery after she attempted to do plastic surgery herself, on her own face! The 54 year old, who has three children, attempted to make herself look younger by injecting herself with liquid silicone in her cheeks and lips.  So far so crazy, but this is when it starts to get serious. The woman thought that everything would be fine but soon the swelling started. She commented: “I can’t believe I did what I did…I thought I was going to be happy with the results, then the next day, my face became very inflamed, very red [and] swollen.”

Amazingly, this isn’t an isolated case. The doctor who had to perform the corrective surgery on this woman has also spoken out, saying that: “We’ve noticed an uptick in people trying to do things like this at home…and having problems, and (then) having to come in and see us.”

The rise in popularity of plastic surgery, coupled with the economic downturn is apparently turning more and more people towards the idea of performing their own surgeries at home. This is not a good idea (but you knew that already right?)

This is a worrying trend which seems to be tacked onto the back of the rise of unlicensed cosmetic surgery.  Trends such as Botox parties are becoming more and more popular and yet many of them are not safe. This story, whilst shocking and, quite frankly, amusing, has a very serious point behind it. If you are going to take the plunge into cosmetic surgery, make sure that you are doing so with a licensed, qualified and competent doctor who will do a beautiful and professional job. Don’t do it yourself, leave it to the experts.
