Twins generally like to assert their independence. After spending childhood being dressed the same by parents and having to share birthdays and having to live with always having to share attention, twins generally mark themselves out from each other as they get older. This is what makes this cosmetic surgery story all the more shocking; a pair of twin sisters have spoken out about how they have jointly spent over £60,000 on cosmetic surgery. Amazingly, they both wished to defy the ageing process (as so many of us do) but they also didn’t want the plastic surgery to harm their identity- they have undergone the same procedures at the same time since they were 21 in order that they continue to look identical!

It all started when the twins, Jo and Kerry, went under the knife when they were younger to have nose jobs.  They told the Daily Mail that, because they were so used to doing everything together since they were children that checking into the same clinic for the same surgery just seemed like a natural progression and, at least to them, didn’t seem as strange as some people might first believe it to be.  One of the siblings, Kerry, said:

“It might sound barmy to some to have cosmetic surgery just because your twin is having it, but we would hate to look different, so we had to have the cosmetic surgery together.”

Indeed everybody ages differently; even twins would not be guaranteed to keep their identical looks as they aged. This is because the ageing process can be drastically affected by lifestyle choices, such as smoking or heavy drinking, as well as genetics. By turning to cosmetic surgery as they age (both twins are now 34) the twins can ensure that they both keep their identity without losing their youthful looks.  The £60,000 the twins have so-far spent is only likely to increase as they continue to with their equal obsession in cosmetic surgery. So far they’ve had breast enlargements, Botox and eyelifts and keep their identical look flowing with matching hair extensions and clothes. It’s a look which is certainly going to get positive male attention from them and it highlights the huge advances in cosmetic surgery over the last few years. If two women can undergo the same procedure to look the same then it really shows the consistency doctors can now achieve.

One of the major trends in the cosmetic industry over the last few years has been the startling rise in the number of brides-to-be deciding to undergo breast augmentations. 

The change in fashion in bridal wear from heaps of material and ruffles to slinkier, more body-con numbers, has led many women to realise that their flaws can’t be hidden any longer. Thus, like a bouquet, many women are now choosing to throw away their love handles and their low self confidence!

Many women have a dream of what their wedding will be like, normally from a very young age and the perfect physical form is normally one very important part of this dream.  Breast Augmentation can make a bride confident that she will fill out her dress and will look confident and stunning as she walks down the aisle.   One bride-to-be, Jackie O’Neil, took herself from a 32AA to a 32C cup before her dream wedding in Cyprus. There were lots of clothes I just couldn’t wear, like small summer dresses. “When I went for a consultation, I was a nervous wreck. But it had totally changed my life and given me confidence I just never had.” Jackie’s story is testament to just how big a change to your life a breast augmentation could make. Her wedding might have been slightly deflated if she hadn’t chosen to have the surgery and yet she battled through her fears and came out the other side much more confident, and much more married!

With breast augmentation’s constantly being one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world year on year, and with an estimated 6 billion pounds spent on wedding every year, it seems almost inevitable that eventually the two industries would collide in the form of bride’s boob jobs.  Like everything else to do with weddings, it seems that most women believe that the cost is ultimately worth it; they are probably right. It is a day which you will remember forever and, after the confetti has been swept up, the cake eaten and your drunk Auntie Mabel carried up to bed, you will be left with two things.  Firstly a partner to love and cherish, but also a new found confidence which will never divorce you.

Despite the difficult economic climate which we are all facing up to as we come towards the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, some companies are still managing to stay afloat and even improve their business.

One of these success stories can most certainly be seen as MYA, the Leeds-based cosmetic surgery company.  The company has reported a 25% increase in enquires for procedures at the beginning of the year compared with the year before.  The increase demand for MYA’s service seems to point to the fact that the cosmetic surgery industry may well turn out to be recession-proof; the 1224 enquiries received since the start of year seeming to back up this notion.

MYA stands for Make Yourself Amazing and there certainly seems to be an amazing story behind these figures posted in the most turbulent economic times seen since World War 2.  John Ryan, the company’s chairman, has said: “The recession is a real thing, but with cosmetic surgery people regard it as a priority in their lives and they will forego a new car or a holiday to get it done. People feel it gives them the boost they require in difficult times.” This seems to sum up the public’s reasoning; they might be feeling down about the economy but many people are choosing to alter their appearance in order to give themselves an extra lift or indeed to give themselves an advantage in the jobs market. Looking good now matters to young professionals more than it ever did in the past.

Breast Enlargements seem to be the most popular procedure with 62% of MYA’s patients opting for this option.  It is not just patient numbers that seem to prove that MYA is defying the recession. It recently created 12 new jobs in Leeds through the creation of a new patient booking system and it intends to spend £1million on a new advertising campaign which will also be the catalyst to the proposed opening of 6 new clinics throughout the U.K.  This story is only made the more remarkable when you consider MYA is only one company and represents only a fraction of the cosmetic surgery market. When all the industry was considered together it is likely that the figures would be even more amazing and be undeniable proof that the cosmetic surgery industry is not only going to survive the recession but is going to come out of it perkier, fresher and fabulous.

In times gone by flamboyant, gushing gowns could hide any excess weight that might be stubbornly clinging to the bride-to-be wearer but changes in fashion mean that there are now not so many ruffles and plumages to hide behind.

This could be one of the reasons behind the rise in brides going under the knife before they walk down the aisle.  One company said it had already received a staggering 400 enquiries about plastic surgery for weddings since the beginning of the year! Interestingly, it’s not just lipo that these fabulous brides are wanting; they want breast enlargements as well so they can fill the tighter, less forgiving gowns which are now on the market.

The owner of the Mirror, Mirror bridal boutiques in London, Maria Yainnikaris, has commented how she has noticed a trend in women saying: “I need to wait for my fitting”. These same women then return with “very high and firm breasts”.  The catwalk has been seen as partly to blame, wedding couture is now big business and the current trend for slimmer, ‘body-con’ dresses is what the public is spending its money on.  Traditional wedding dresses were designed to be an un-sexual as possible, sexuality and the idea of the virginal bride were seen as clashing ideas.  Now however, the mounds of fabric and frills have gone the way of the virginal bride and now it’s all about the sexy, slim bride.  The manager of The Wedding Dress Shop, in Wimbledon, commented on the trend saying that: “…the trend is now influenced by delicate, fluid styles with lots of lace, thin spaghetti straps and no structure at all. There is one dress in particular that is impossible to wear without a perfect pair of breasts or a breast augmentation or lift. The dress has back cross-over straps so a bra is completely out of the question.”

However, surgeons cannot work miracles. Indeed, one leading practitioner has commented on this issue. He said that he had seen a rush of women who begin to panic as their big day approaches and thus come to demand unrealistic and unhealthy turnaround times. These women are being turned away and told that their expectations are simply too unrealistic. Looking fabulous on your big day is important, but so is feeling fabulous and you don’t want to have to run straight from the hospital bed to walk down the aisle!

Many teenagers complain that they don’t get given enough pocket money to be able to afford the new Topshop arrival they want, but one teenager from Preston is now being forced to defend the fact she received £4000 for a boob-job.

Amanda Ryan, resident of the Lancashire city, received the operation after her GP confirmed that Ms. Ryan’s small bust was causing her problems.

Critics have spoken out against the procedure, commenting that there must surely be a better way for people’s taxes to be spent but the feisty seventeen year old has hit back, commenting that she was fully entitled to public money for the operation. Indeed the girl’s GP did point out that the teenager’s jealousy and envy directed towards her peers with larger busts was bringing her down and meaning that Amanda was not able to enjoy life as much as she might.

Amanda has spoken out, saying that: “It was funded on the NHS but, as anyone who works in the NHS knows, you have got to have a very, very good reason and there are different funds for everything.”  A crippling lack of self-confidence is certainly a big problem for any teenager and the improvement to her life could perhaps be said to be beyond money; the message would certainly seem to be that improved confidence is priceless! Amanda’s money had originally been against her daughter having such a risky surgery and expressed the concerns any mother would. However she soon realised that her daughter would have got the surgery as soon as she turned 18 anyway and thus she chose to give her daughter the permission she needed to go ahead with the breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation’s are amongst the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.K, although they are rarely performed on patients so young and through funding given by the NHS. Many patients opt to go private for their treatment and have to shoulder the large costs of the operations themselves.  Many different age-ranges, from older women wanting to give their retirement an extra-boost to young professionals wanting to give themselves perkier job-prospects.  Debates about whether or not the NHS should have funded the operation aside, surely everyone will agree that the fact that a young adult will now have the confidence to chase her life goals is a cause for celebration and proof in the value of cosmetic surgery.
