The Cosmetic Surgery Wish List: Hair Replacement?

Advancements in plastic surgery have allowed for the range of different procedures to become very extensive. There are procedures for breasts, thighs, stomachs, and calves. The number of different facial procedures alone is huge. There is even a procedure that can make wearing high heels pain free. A very high ranking procedure on the wish list for both men and women is hair replacement.

Harris Interactive recently performed a survey on behalf of RealSelf.com to put together a plastic surgery wish list for 2010. The survey included 2,227 adults of which 54 percent said that, if money was not considered, they would have plastic surgery. Of those who said they would have a procedure done, many would have hair replacement surgery (25 percent of women and 20 percent of men). People have often
looked for a way to arrest a receding hair line, thinning hair, or a bald spot. Many have tried those hair re-growth sprays, with no luck. Hair replacement procedures would be a great choice for someone who wants to get rid of that embarrassing feature.

There are many different surgical procedures available for hair replacement. Flap surgery has been successfully performed for over 20 years and is able to cover large areas of baldness. Tissue expansion is commonly used for reconstructive surgery to repair areas of substantial skin loss, but it is also now being used as a hair replacement technique with great success. One of the most common forms of hair replacement surgery is grafting. Where hair bearing skin is removed from a donor area and placed in the balding spots. There are also many promising procedures undergoing clinical trials. There are many things to consider when choosing what technique will be best for each person and a good surgeon will be able to help with that decision.

Some estimate that 20 percent of all women will suffer some sort of hair loss due to ageing, menopause, or illness. The hair loss is usually a gradual thinning all over the scalp as compared to men who are more likely to loose hair in localized areas. Alan Bauman is a board certified hair restoration surgeon and founder of Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton Florida. He is a leader in hair replacement surgeries and said, “I’m not surprised that RealSelf.com’s new survey on cosmetic treatment preferences clearly showed there is a strong desire among both men and women for better hair through hair transplants.”

The study showed a great amount of interest in plastic surgical procedures by the people surveyed. People want to make themselves look good and feel confident. Hair replacement procedures can allow them to do just that.

20 Years Younger

The China Daily has printed a story which proves that attempting to beat the ageing process by going under the knife is not just a western phenomenon; it is something which is now happening all over the world.

We’re so used to seeing stories about our home grown British celebs and Los Angeles socialites going under the knife that, often, we don’t realise that the plastic surgery business has grown exponentially in all parts of the globe.  A 50-year old dance teacher from the Chongqing municipality, made regular visits to her surgeon and ended up, quite amazingly, having more than 40 procedures in just four years in an attempt to become happier with how she looked.

The woman is now said to look like a thirty-year old after starting her treatments in 2005 and, perhaps unsurprisingly, she says she is still not happy and has no intention of stopping now. This story, whilst amusing, does highlight one of the dangers of plastic surgery; it can, on very rare occasions, become addictive and leave patients having treatments which they don’t really need or, in extreme cases, even want.  Once in this cycle of getting surgeries and changing one’s appearance, it is often hard to break out of it and this is the problem which the subject of this article seemingly has.  The woman, Li Jia, has spoken out, incredibly poetically, about why she decided to undergo cosmetic treatment:

“I am a dance teacher and I hate when people tell me that I look like a flower from behind and nothing from the front.”

Well she is certainly blooming now, having reconstructed and enhanced almost every part of her body to the tune of around $72,000. No exact details could be found about exactly what procedures had been undergone nor which ones had been planned for future treatments.

For many people, one or two surgeries are all they need to feel happy with themselves. A face-lift to help them look younger, a hair transplant to cover up rapidly receding hair; it is very rare that such a plethora of treatments be undergone by one person. Li Jia’s husband has joked that she should take up residence in the hospital but, as recovery times continue to decrease for most surgeries, she could find herself coming out of hospital faster than she did in the past.

Anxiety Antidote

It is harder to think of a bigger life-change than undergoing a major cosmetic surgery procedure. The stress of payment, the physical and mental strain of the actual change and, oftentimes, the fear of the surgery itself all add up to a very nervous and stressful time for even the most surgically-experienced patients.

It has now been said that one of the ways to reduce levels of anxiety is to talk through any prospective surgery with a qualified, experienced and personable plastic surgeon. It has been shown that doing so can significantly reduce levels of stress leading up to making the decision on having a cosmetic treatment.

In these times of recession and necessary financial restraint, we have already told you stories about professionals undergoing Botox and face-lifts in an attempt to get a foothold in an ever more competitive jobs market. However, the flip-side to this coin is, according to research, that many of these professionals then feel guilty for spending the money on themselves, and on something which could be considered vain, in these thrifty times.  This feeling of guilt can often outweigh the anticipation of the confidence-boost which the surgery will inevitably bring.

Dr. Paul Parker, a cosmetic surgeon based in New Jersey, has spoken out about this trend which is not only prevalent in the United States; it can also be seen in the U.K as well.  “Elective cosmetic surgery can be nerve-wracking or even frightening for some patients. First, there is a financial cost associated with it and secondly, there is a ”fear of the unknown” regarding how they will look or feel following surgery.”

These are only natural feelings and ones which everyone will feel, even surgery-hardened celebrities, before going under the knife. Of course, with celebrities these fears might not necessarily manifest themselves physically due to an over-Botoxing of expression lines in their faces.  In order to combat these feelings of anxiety and worry, it is important that you choose a cosmetic surgery company and indeed a clinic in which you feel welcome, looked-after and, above all, comfortable.  Don’t feel that, by simply talking to a surgeon, you are committing yourself to having the procedure done. The best surgeons will be able to talk candidly about the pros and cons of any operation and won’t pressure your decision in any way.  Surgery is scary, but living your life with very low-confidence could be an even scarier prospect.

A New Form of Support

If you can’t afford that liposuction you really feel you need and just don’t have the time for less-invasive treatments before you jet off on your holidays or travel off to that all important social occasion then have no fear, something new is at hand which can help you attain your dream figure in just a matter of seconds.

Yes it’s true; a new range of underwear aimed at combating cellulite has been unleashed on the U.K, just in time for summer!

The new range has been launched by John Lewis and, whilst it is certainly not a complete alternative to surgical and non-invasive cosmetic procedures, it is another helping hand for women who struggle to maintain their figure. The manufacturer of the garments, SCALA, says that the underwear contains special crystals which emit infra-red rays which, in turn, stimulate blood flow to the problem areas and help to “melt away” problem fats and toxins. It might all sound a bit “bifidus digestivum” but John Lewis appears to be behind it, with the firm’s lingerie buyer saying: “Between 80 and 90% of women have cellulite somewhere on their body which is why there is such a huge market for potions and lotions in the category.” It is hoped that this underwear can tap into this already saturated market by offering its own unique take on the cellulite issue.

It shouldn’t just be normal members of the public who buy the products, glossy magazines are full each week of celebrities who are apparently blighted by unsightly wobbles. The liposuction and new laser-lipo surgeries are big business for the cosmetic surgery industry but one doubts they will be too troubled by this new advance in underwear; the pants and other garments will only offer temporary solutions and surgery will still be the only solution for those who are seeking a more permanent solution.  Of course, body-con underwear is nothing new, it has been growing in popularity over the last few seasons due to the more figure-hugging clothes which have been coming down the catwalk; it is hoped the ‘science’ behind this new range from SCALA will help boost it above the competition.

However, underwear does not often look good with a skimpy bikini and thus if you’re wanting to look your best on the beach then a cosmetic treatment is probably the best solution to a happy holiday!

Saline Still Super!

New research by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has discovered that breast surgery patients in the U.S are still favouring saline-filled implants despite the recent news that silicon versions have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The shockwaves such a decision was expected to send through the industry have clearly yet to materialise.  Breast Augmentations are always the number one cosmetic surgery performed both in the U.K and the U.S and thus it was thought that the introduction of silicone implants would have more of a noticeable effect.

The ASAPS surveyed 1746 of its members and discovered that patient preference was the number one reason why a disproportionate number of saline implants were being used in comparison to their silicone sister.  “The approval of silicone gel implants has expanded the options for women considering breast augmentation” confirmed the authors of the study, Rod Rohrich and Edward Reece, but they went onto say: “Nevertheless, obtaining favourable patient outcomes is usually not dependent on the type of implant as much as the use of patient-appropriate techniques by a qualified and experienced surgeon.”  Essentially, what they’re saying is that, whatever new innovations may be brought into the breast augmentation industry, the type of implant an individual patient receives will always depend on their individual case and how best to proceed for the unique case in question.  This is why it is always important to book an in-depth initial consultation with your chosen surgeon before deciding to embark upon a cosmetic enhancement.

The number of women undergoing Breast Augmentations has increased a mind-blowing 250% from 1997 to 2008 and, as the procedure comes down in cost and less and less stigma is attached to having a cosmetic treatment, this number is only set to increase. This can only be good news for the cosmetic surgery industry. Also, as the numbers of people having breast augmentations increases, so will the number of silicone implants being used.  The cult of celebrity introduced breast enlargement and reduction surgery to a new audience and now the craze has filtered down to normal members of the public. With more innovations and new inventions likely to revolutionise procedures even more in the coming years it is likely that results will come to look even more natural. You needn’t be down about your endowment anymore, boost your confidence by boosting your breasts today!

Technique to Improve the Quality of Lip Cosmetic Surgery

Specialists have concluded that the quality of lip augmentation procedures could be significantly improved by separating lips into certain zones.

Lip enlargement, which is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, is very popular among women seeking to become more attractive, since plump, full lips are seen as a sign of good looks.

The authors of the study, which was published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, notice: “There has been a dramatic increase in cosmetic surgery in western culture in the past few decades, with an increasing focus on achieving aesthetic ideals and maintaining a youthful appearance.”

A New York Centre for Facial Plastic Surgery researcher who conducted the study performed 137 lip enhancement treatments on 66 patients. The lips were divided into 15 separate zones and injected with a gel filler Restylane.

Dr Andrew Jacono claimed that the technique added precision to the procedure by enabling the surgeon to have more control over lip shape and size. The patients rated their satisfaction with the procedure very highly, since the average score was 4.5, on a scale from 0 to 5. Dr Jacono summed up: “This technique was met with high patient satisfaction and no adverse effects.”
