New Form of Liposuction Offered in US

Laser surgery technology incorporated into Liposuction could lead the way.

A surgery in Los Angeles is offering patients a new form of liposuction that can offer faster results and a shorter recovery period in a method called SmartLipo.

Dr Christine Petti, based in LA, is offering patients the treatment which involves the use of lasers, described as “a minimally invasive procedure offering abundant benefits for liposuction patients”.  Petti is the Founder and Medical Director of the Aesthetic Accents Cosmetic and Laser Surgery Centre and is a highly acclaimed Cosmetic Surgeon in the LA area.

The treatment involves placing the patient under a local anaesthetic and then making an incision using a fibre optic laser. This method reduces scarring and other after effects of surgery by closing down the blood vessels, a reaction to the wavelengths sent by the laser. As a result, scarring is kept minimal, as well as bruising and swelling which subsequently reduces recovery time.

The method also includes melting of the fatty deposits in the body using further laser techniques. Here, two wavelengths work together to mould the fat and aide in skin tightening. The company refers to the procedure as producing “smoother, more natural and superior aesthetic results.”

Dr Petti herself says, “I believe that beauty is twofold, combining aesthetic eye appeal with inner peace to create a feeling of complete well-being. We work to achieve total enhancement.”

The technique differs to the traditional one, whereby a tiny incision is made in the skin without a laser and a tube called a cannula is inserted into the body. This tube is used to vacuum out the fatty deposits that lie beneath the skin and are often unresponsive to dieting and exercising. The cannula is pushed and pulled through the layer of fat, breaking it up as it vacuums it up through suction. Even with this version of the treatment, the incision is carefully considered so as to prevent scarring on the most part. To prevent patients from going into shock, fluids are on hand to enter the body as some are inevitably lost along with the fat.

Patients are always urged to discuss any procedure with their consultant before undergoing any surgeries. A surgeon can help you to decide on the risks involved with both forms of liposuction.
