Plastic surgeons perform millions of procedures around the world. These procedures include invasive surgeries such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. They also perform non-invasive surgeries such as botox and face lifts. When asked what surgeries these surgeons have underwent themselves, liposuction was a popular response.

The Plastic Surgery Channel reported that the American Society of Plastic surgeons performed a survey on some of its members. It reported that, of the 276 members surveyed, 62 percent had undergone procedures themselves. Most of them had undergone noninvasive procedures such as botox injections, laser skin resurfacing, and chemical peels. The Cosmetic Surgery Review said that there were more female surgeons who had opted for these non-invasive surgeries than male surgeons. However, the survey did reveal that a higher percentage of male surgeons underwent cosmetic procedures than men in the rest of society.

The most popular surgical procedures among these plastic surgeons were liposuction and breast enhancement procedures. In fact, more than 30 percent of the surgeons reported that they had opted for invasive procedures. This figure is not as high as the percentages for the general public, however it is encouraging. The fact that surgeons are willing to undergo their own procedures allows them to be a walking advertisement for plastic surgery.

Liposuction is a very popular procedure throughout the world. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that there were 3,509 liposuction procedures performed on men and women in the UK during 2009. This means that nearly one in ten procedures done in the UK are liposuction surgeries. This procedure is popular because it can be applied in many areas on the body, to tighten them up and give the body a more streamlined look.

Liposuction procedures are quick, usually taking between 20 and 30 minutes. It is a procedure that removes pockets of fat from problem areas on the body. It is done by using a suction tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into a small incision and then it is pushed and pulled through the fat cells. This pushing and pulling breaks up the fat cells, allowing them to be sucked out of the body. The results are amazing and many people have learned this fact for themselves.

This survey will surely make people more comfortable with choosing to have plastic surgical procedures. Knowing that many plastic surgeons choose to undergo the same procedures they perform may raise the confidence of prospective patients.  

The quantity of plastic surgical procedures performed continues to top record numbers each year. Cosmetic surgery has become progressively more popular and is available to a wider range of individuals. Older people have procedures done to look younger and over-weight people get surgery done to be thinner. Men and women alike undergo plastic surgery to reshape the contours of their body. A research study performed by GoodSurgeonGuide.co.ik said that 41 percent of girls between the ages of 13-16 years old are already considering a cosmetic procedure. That’s a little more than two in every five girls. Of the girls who said that they wanted a procedure done, 62 percent said they wanted bigger breasts, 55 percent wanted to change their teeth and 49 percent wanted some form of surgery for weight loss. Around 33 percent also thought that some nose work would be good too.

The study asked 1,012 girls in this age group about their views on cosmetic procedures and the answers were overwhelmingly positive from most of the girls. The media today has raised the awareness of the public concerning plastic surgeries. The majority of this media coverage is very flattering and thus, many people are more comfortable with considering cosmetic surgeries. It is not surprising that young girls have dreams of undergoing a procedure to make themselves more beautiful.

When asked about what concerns are making the girls consider plastic surgeries their answers were typical. Many teens are picked on at school about something and physical appearance is usually on the top of the list for bullies to pick at. Twenty-five percent of the girls said that they would change their appearance so that they would no longer be bullied about it at school. Celebrity worship is another category that pushed these girls to consider having plastic surgery. Most girls have some celebrity role model whom they idolize. Eleven percent said that considering a cosmetic procedure hinged on the fact that their celebrity role model had some plastic surgery done. Society promotes good looking bodies and pretty faces, as necessary for success, and teens see this idea everywhere they look.

Some of these teens, 49 percent, wanted to have the procedure now and 7 percent had already had some plastic surgery done. The co-founder of GoodSurgeonGuide.co.uk, Christiana Clogg commented, “If parents find themselves in situations where their children want surgery and they decide to support them, it is vital that the correct research is carried out to ensure teenagers don’t become victims of bad surgeons.”

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the number of men undergoing plastic surgical procedures has risen substantially in 2009. The increase is an amazing 21% in overall procedures performed on men. Cosmetic surgery is quickly becoming a men’s trend too.

The BAAPS reported that the increase in male procedures was most profoundly shown in the breast reduction (gynaecomastia). These procedures rose an astounding 80% between 2008, with 581 procedures. It is the third most popular procedure in men behind nose-jobs (rhinoplasty) and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Many new advancements in technology have improved many of the procedures for plastic surgery. In fact, a new procedure is now available for breast reduction which utilizes radiofrequency assisted technology. This technology allows for a much less invasive procedure to remove the fat cells while at the same time tightening the loose skin. This replaces the painful pushing and pulling of liposuction and is drawing more and more patients.

The media has also made an impact on the plastic surgery scene. Mr. Rajiv Grover, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS Secretary said, “This year we have recorded a dramatic rise in a number of male surgical procedures, probably due to heightened media attention, which has allowed men to realize the positive outcomes that can be achieved.”

The negative opinion that society once had toward plastic surgery no longer exists. People are much less judgmental of others who have undergone such a procedure and thus everyone is more apt to talk about the results of their procedure. With the plethora of positive testimonials available men are more inclined to consider a procedure to give them the body that they desire.

Over the past ten years plastic surgery has shed the shackles of negative opinion and emerged as a popular way to get the desirable body. Cosmetic surgery is no longer restricted to the rich and famous. Now they are common place throughout the masses around the world.

The UK is not exempt from this craze. In fact, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) , the overall number of plastic surgical procedures rose from 34,187 in 2008 to 36,482 in 2009. The public interest in cosmetic procedures is continuously growing in the UK, whereas the popularity is actually lessening in the US. There was a twelve percent decrease in cosmetic surgeries in the US from 2008-2009.

The number of women who underwent cosmetic procedures in 2009 was 32,859. Which is an increase of 5.4% over 2008. The highest change in procedures was breast reduction with in increase of 17%. As Cosmetic surgery becomes more mainstream, women are more confident in the procedures and thus are more willing to undergo plastic surgery.

There has also been a substantial rise in the number of men undergoing cosmetic surgery. The BAAPS reported that 3,623 men had plastic surgery in 2009, 21% more than in 2008. The area that increased the most for men was also breast reduction with an astounding increase of 80%. Increased media attention to plastic surgery is surely one of the reasons that more men have decided to undergo procedures. With more men seeing the positive outcomes of cosmetic surgery, the number of procedures will surely continue to rise.

Plastic surgery procedures have been improving over the years. New technology allows some procedures to be done with much less pain and the surgeries are becoming progressively faster. These technological advances have made plastic surgery less invasive and most of the recovery time is spent at home, instead of in the hospital. As these improvements are witnessed by more and more people the increase in the popularity of plastic surgery in the UK will persist.
