7 Extreme Do It Yourself Surgeries

With inflation and job losses I know people are looking at ways to save money. I even asked Dominos if they had any 2 for 1 deals on last night’s takeaway pizza but you have to draw the line somewhere and this goes way way beyond. Our lawyer advised us to advise you not to try any of this at home before you have undertaken medical training or at least put the scissors in a jug of hot water first.

Injectable Treatment – Recycle that deep fat fryer waste oil.
DIY can take many forms, but the most extreme self plastic surgery I’ve ever heard is a case of a Korean woman who had been paying for plastic surgery for years, was forced into treatment for a mental disorder, but was able to find a surgeon who let her give herself her own injections. When she ran out of silicon she took to injecting cooking oil into her face.

Abscess - Roll up your sleeves and dig in
You are on a Round the World Yacht Race stuck in the middle of the ocean and you have an abscess on your arm. This was the problem Russian sailor Viktor Yazykov faced and if he did not do something quickly he was going to lose his arm. He did what we would all do and emailed an infectious disease specialist at the New England Medical Center who told him how to drain the abscess and he carried on his race finishing 10th. Rather you than me Viktor!

Mole Removal – This guy slices like a pro.
Apart from being a little furry mammal that has big paws and dig holes in our lawns they also grow on our skin. That looked a pretty big mole and to be even considering doing it yourself is insane and one of those things really are best left to the professionals. I wonder what he did with it…yeeeeeew!!!. I have a strong stomach and even I had to have two go’s at watching the actual slice.

WARNING THIS VIDEO IS NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH AND MAY CAUSE YOU TO SEE YOUR BREAKFAST AGAIN

Ear Correction - Superglue has many uses, sticking body parts together is not one.
Using superglue was never going to be permanent solution for correcting prominent ears. Yes I sympathize with those who suffer from this, you must think everybody is going to flick them and have heard every big ears joke under the sun.  I have accidentally attached two fingers together with superglue whilst trying to squeeze the last out of a dried up old tube and it burst out the sides, but with enough hot water and chewing it will come undone. Your life must be very cruel to drive you to think that your bat ears are going to stop flapping with nothing more than a household glue. We have found worrying number of cases reported in medical journals of this going on and I guess as the recession hits a couple of dollars for a tube of glue versus several thousand dollars for surgery is an attractive option for some.

Brain Surgery - Just one question..Why?
We have all heard the expression “She/he is no brain surgeon” well this is taking it too far to prove a point. Heather Perry from Gloucester in England attempted to cure her chronic fatigue syndrome by travelling to the US for her “brain surgery” . It seems it all started following an email exchange with a guy in Pennsylvania who said he did his own. All we know is that it consisted of drilling two holes in her own head. It is said that a film crew filmed her DIY brain surgery but we have been unable to locate it (okay we didn’t try that hard to find it) To her surprise it all went wrong and she drilled too deep and needed to have emergency surgery to repair damage to severed membrane that protects brain tissue.

Tattoo Removal – Desperate people do desperate things.
No home DIY surgery kit is complete without power tools and an electric sander is a must for removing that “Bubba & Crystal Forever” tattoo.  It does make you wonder what other extremes people will go to rid themselves of their body art. Anyone for a wire brush and a sheet of sandpaper?

Chicken Bone Nose Job - All you need is a chisel and a KFC
Not many people will have looked in the mirror and thought “If only I had chicken bone for a nose I would be happy.” According to Dr David Veale who is a psychologist at the celebrity Priory Hospital in London the unnamed patient “pushed a chisel up his nose and then replaced the cartilage he had taken off with a chicken bone” and continued “These are people who can’t afford to go to a surgeon.” Did anyone ask if he calls it his nose or his beak?

Children Turn to Plastic Surgery to Avoid Bullying, Revealed by Doctor

A plastic surgeon has revealed girls aged just 14 have had cosmetic surgery in order to escape being bullied at school.

Cosmetic surgeon and president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons Douglas McGeorge claimed he had adjusted a teenager‘s nose shape and performed breast enlargement procedures on other teens.

Mr McGeorge, who is a specialist in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, said some parents and children addressed him believing there were no other options to escape severe bullying. The surgeon did not think these procedures could be influenced by teenagers‘ wishes to look like celebrities they admired. ‘Children are very cruel and there’s a lot of stigma attached to appearance,’ said Mr McGeorge. However, charities against bullying claim that the bullies are the ones who need to change and not the ones that are bullied.

Mr McGeorge said he had already performed surgery on a 14-year-old girl’s nose costing around £3,500 after she was targeted over her appearance at three schools. Most plastic clinics do not agree to perform surgery on people who are younger than 18, but children are eligible to receive any medical treatment if their parents agree.

Mr McGeorge claimed that he was approached by the girl‘s parents as their last resort after none of the ways to stop the girl being harrassed had worked. The private surgeon said that the operation had completely changed the girl‘s life. ‘This was an unusual case, but the parents had been through every other option available before taking the decision,’ he added.

He said there have been cases when he was requested to perform breast enlargement procedures on young girls who were slower at developing sexually than other girls of the same age. They were given expandable breast implants to stop them from being harrassed.

To perform the procedure, the surgeons insert breast implants that work by slowly expanding the breast tissue. However, director of the charity Bullying UK Liz Carnell, said: ‘I don’t think bullying victims should be changing their appearance or anything about themselves to please the bullies. It is the bullies that have got the problem, not the victims.’

Director of children’s charity Kidscape Michelle Elliott was alarmed by the fact that young girls were requesting breast enlargement procedures. She said: ‘I can understand a child undergoing cosmetic surgery if there is something specifically wrong that needs correcting, regardless of the bullying, but not breast implants. That’s crazy.’

Last year, there has been a 150 per cent increase in teenagers demanding breast enlargement procedures.

Surgeons think that young girls choose surgical breast enlargement because of the influence of celebrities who have undergone plastic surgery in order to improve the  appearance of their bodies. Statistics gathered from three of UK‘s biggest cosmetic surgery companies reveal that just under 600 teenagers between 18 and 19 had breast implants fitted in the past year.

Number of Men Opting for Cosmetic Surgery on the Rise

Growing number of men considering it as a viable option.

BBC News reports that a growing number of men in the United Kingdom are undergoing cosmetic surgery such as tummy tuck’s and liposuction

The news follows figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) this year. It showed that in 2007, the number men who decided to undergo tummy tucks (also known as abdominoplasty) rose by 61%, with Liposuction rising by 18%. However despite these figures the numbers of men choosing the treatments is still relatively small, with the total number of men having a tummy tuck in 2007 being 90 and 582 having liposuction. Currently, the most popular form of cosmetic surgery for men is rhinoplasty (nose jobs).

The BBC talked to Dr Jag Chana, a consultant plastic surgeon at a Hospital in Hertfordshire. He pointed out that liposuction and tummy tucks are not weight loss options and many of the patients he sees in his clinic are unsuitable for the operations.

The procedures are designed for people who have already lost weight and may have excess skin left behind as a consequence. So those who have approached him with a beer belly have been turned away, told to first try and lose the weight via diet and exercise.
“Tummy tucks and liposuction are invasive procedures. Possible risks are scarring, loss of sensation and infection to the area, but these are rare.
“Patients can normally return to work after two weeks but exercise and lifting must be avoided for at least six weeks as an abdominal corset needs to be worn to support the area.”
As time goes on, experts have said that more men will continue to decide on cosmetic surgery as more men care about their appearance.
At Dr Chana’s clinic in particular has seen a 40% increase in the numbers of men having surgeries there last year. The number has since been rising and Dr Chan himself agrees that this will continue.
Liposuction involves removing fatty deposits that can appear in the chest, chin, sides, stomach, thighs and back. It is difficult to remove fat from these areas via exercise, which is why surgery could be an option. Rhinoplasty (or a nose job), reshapes the nose to give it symmetry by removing cartilage.
