Preferred Facial Treatments and Procedures

1. Microdermabrasion scrapes dead skin cells from the skin to reveal younger looking skin. This corrects sun damage, uneven skin tones, wrinkles, acne and brown spots.

2. Chemical peels go deeper into the skin to remove uneven pigment, improve the texture of the skin and reduce wrinkles. The skin will be red and peel later. Alphahydroxy and trichloroacetic acid are the most common chemicals used.

3. Laser treatments are a newer form of facial treatments, but they are very popular. They have numerous uses for them. There is laser resurfacing of the skin that goes deep into the skin and it is not painful. However, it does not work on dark skin tones. There is also laser scar removal which uses the laser to vaporize the scar and new skin grows in it places. It can look very natural and the scar is not as noticeable. Also, laser tattoo removal uses lasers to remove tattoos through multiple sessions. Lastly, there is laser hair removal that kills the hair at the root, for a more permanent hair removal affect.

4. Injectable fillers are available in numerous forms. They are used on the cheeks and lips usually. There is Botox that is effective, but can be deadly if done incorrectly. Or there is Collagen injections. The collagen has been collected from animals and turned into human collagen. It can be used on most areas of the body. Lastly, there is the option of using the patients own fat to fill in wrinkles, lines and scars. This is the safest method to use.

5. Surgery can be done on eye lids, ears and chins. These surgeries improve drooping eye lids, fat pockets around the eyes, reduce the size of ears and increase the size of the chin.

6. Nose jobs are done for both aesthetic and deformity reasons. Nose jobs can either increase or decrease the size of the nose.

7. Face lifts lift the facial tissue, due to sagging from age. The procedure is very invasive and there is a very long healing process associated with it, which is at least a month, if not longer. Face lifts remove years from a person’s face in one procedure.

8. Facial implants fill in sagging areas of the face.

9. Permanent makeup can be added to eyes and lips.

10. Liposuction can be done on the chin, neck and cheeks to remove pockets of fat that has built up over time.

Women Get More Wrinkles Around The Mouth

According to a recent study, women may be more likely than men to develop perioral wrinkles. These are wrinkles that form around the mouth and not only are women more prone to develop them but these wrinkles also develop deeper in women than in men. Researchers for the Netherlands hoped to find out why this is.

Emma C. Paes, of the University Medical Center in Utrecht, said in a news release, “The aim of this study is to obtain new insight into the perception that women wrinkle earlier and more severely than men. If we understood the reasons for differences in wrinkling between women and men, then we might be able to develop better strategies for the treatment of perioral wrinkling.” The research was actually performed on cadavers and measurements were taken of the upper lip region in both males and females.

The results of the research were enlightening. They found there were fewer sweat and sebaceous glands in women than men. This deficiency could influence the natural filling of the skin. Women’s skin tissue around the mouth also contained fewer blood vessels which would create poorer circulation. Again this deficiency might be a cause for the formation of wrinkles. The researchers believe that the deepness of
the wrinkles may be caused by the closer attachment of muscle fibers surrounding the lips to the middle layer of skin. This might cause a strain on the lips pulling them inward and thus making deeper perioral wrinkles. The conclusion was that these results do provide a feasible explanation for why women are more prone to these wrinkles.

Paes said; “We think it is important to consider the reasons why a particular treatment may or may not be effective. Sometimes one has to go back to the basics instead of just moving forward. In the end, having more basic knowledge about a problem can speed up the process of finding the right solution.” It is hoped that this study will give surgeons that basic knowledge and help them to better treat facial wrinkles.

There are many treatments for wrinkles such as Botox injections and injectable wrinkle fillers. There are also lasers, dermabrasion and chemical peels. There is even a treatment called Aluma that uses radio frequency technology to smooth out the wrinkles on the face. These treatments have helped people to get rid of their wrinkles and enjoy a fresh smooth face.

Chemical Peels: Popularity Soaring

There are many different types of cosmetic procedures and they are divided into two categories: surgical and non surgical. Surgical procedures include breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Non-surgical procedures include accent laser treatment, Botox, and collagen injections. A non-surgical procedure that is becoming more and more popular is chemical peels.

The Press Association reports that chemical peels have actually become more popular than face lifts. The number of chemical peels performed in 2009 was three times the procedures performed the previous year. The Harley Medical Group’s Obagi Blue Peel is a treatment which gets rid of blemishes, acne scars, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, and wrinkles. It has been called by some the ‘recessions facelift’ due to
the increased popularity of the treatments. Liz Dale, director of the Harley Medical Group, said, “Non-surgical procedures, which saw big growth last year, have continued to be a strong area for us and now account for 32 percent of all our business.”

Chemical peels are a skin resurfacing procedure, in which the top layer of skin is removed so that the body can replace it with new skin. The new skin will grow back without whatever problem had been on the old skin. There are three different classifications for chemical peels. There are light peels which are basically
exfoliants. Intermediate peels are good for fine lines and superficial hyper pigmentation from sun damage. Deep peels can remove deep lines, medium sized wrinkles, and darker pigmentation. Many people find that they do not need to get a face-lift and are happy to settle for a chemical peel which makes their facial skin
look fresh and young.

In the plastic surgery field chemical peels are indeed increasing in popularity but the most popular cosmetic procedure is still, by far, breast augmentation. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that in 2009 there were a total of 8,565 breast augmentation procedures, in the UK. Studies done in January of 2010 also show that breast augmentation should prove to be the most popular
procedure in 2010. The Press Association reported that 75 percent of breast up lift patients in 2009 were mothers.

Undergoing a plastic surgery procedure can help to make a person look and feel young. Chemical peel are a way for some people to achieve this without a surgical procedure. The popularity of these effective yet non-invasive treatments has been increasing quickly and shows no sign of slowing.

The New Face of Cosmetic Surgery

A revolutionary new procedure is being trialled in the United States which sees the use of the Juvederm Midface Rejuvenation technique.  In layman’s terms it is a new type of injectable facial filler which aims to return youthful plumpness and smoothness to patient’s faces.  Despite the relative newness of the procedure, one patient has already been quick to sing the praises of the new age-defying treatment.

The patient, known as Chris, has explained that, after having the injections, his face felt “filled out” and that his “sunken look” was banished in favour of “plumped up” cheeks. This is certainly something which many people would like to achieve and thus there will be a strong call for the procedure to become more widely available over the coming months and years.  Chris also claimed that the treatment even went so far as to turn up the corners of his mouth; this is definitely one procedure which is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

If it all seems a little too good to be true then it only seems to get better as Chris has also talked about the after effects of the treatment. Many facial injections, such as Botox, can cause bad bruising but this patient claimed that there had been none after the JMR injections.  World-Class doctors at the Hinsdale Centre for Plastic Surgery will now be studying the effects of the treatment very closely to see if Chris is accurate about the success of the procedure and to ensure that such successes can be replicated on other patients who come in for the procedure. The ability to perform quick facial-plumping without bruising will certainly be an idea which the plastic surgery community will be keen to capture and capitalise on.

80% of American plastic surgeons have reported an increase in the number of people wanting non-invasive cosmetic procedures in the last year and these figures would likely be similar if not the same for the U.K if the same research were carried out. The busy nature of people’s lives these days means they can’t afford, temporally nor fiscally, to have weeks off work following a surgical procedure. It is hoped that treatments like JMR will help build on the success of non-invasive alternatives and help people a much more confident self in a much shorter space of time.

Acupuncture Used to Combat Fine Lines

According to the Dove Clinic for Integrated Medicine, acupuncture has been suggested as an alternative method for reducing wrinkles and rejuvenating skin and can be just as effective as cosmetic surgery.

Dr Silvia Bretschneider, a specialist at the Dove Clinic, claims that recent achievements in the field of acupuncture can provide the patient with a gentle and natural way to tone skin.

The doctor explained: ”Regular treatments can give skin the elasticity and moisture it needs to gently fend off future signs of ageing.”

”When combined with lifestyle changes, acupuncture can be a great aid in keeping the skin looking younger for longer.”

Dr Bretschneider pointed out that acupuncture is a highly effective method to deal with wrinkles, lines and ageing spots.

Stricter Rules for Botox Injections

It has been announced that new guidelines are to be applied for patients undergoing Botox procedures. The guidelines are expected to reduce the numbers of dangerous unqualified treatments.

According to the Daily Mail, in order to have someone carry out a Botox injection, the patient will have to have an appointment with their GP first. This is seen as a way to prevent unqualified and hasty procedures.

These rules have been introduced by the General Medical Council (GMC) after it became clear that  this procedure is often performed by individuals who do not have the required qualifications.

Moreover, GMC banned so-called ”Botox parties” where women meet and undergo the procedure together, quite often affected by alcohol, without the supervision of a qualified specialist.

The GMC was founded as an organisation to protect the rights of patients by maintaining a register of qualified and unqualified medical doctors. Last year, the GMC celebrated its 150th birthday.

People who are interested in undergoing cosmetic treatment are strongly recommended to consult a plastic surgery specialist before the procedure.

Moreover, specialists advise patients to do as much research as possible before going for cosmetic surgery abroad.

Patients Want to Keep Having Cosmetic Treatments

It has been suggested that an increasing percentage of people are opting for non-surgical cosmetic procedures in order to see them through the difficult financial times until they can afford invasive treatments again.

Recent studies have shown that plastic surgery industry has not been struck by the worldwide economic crisis just yet, but researchers have already noticed an increased tendency towards tummy tucks and non-surgical facial treatments.

A new report published in the Miami Herald has revealed that there is growing demand for procedures such as non-surgical liposuction and Botox injections.

Dr Carlos Wolf, plastic surgeon and journalist, commented to the publication: “People are not willing to give up all of their cosmetic care.”

“We have found more people are coming in but they are not willing to take big-ticket items. They are doing minimally invasive procedures, things that will not keep them from going to work, with not much down time.”

These observations are possibly linked to a warning issued by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) for plastic surgery patients not to cut down on the costs of cosmetic treatments at the expense of quality.

Dr John Canady, the president of ASPS, recommended: “The search for bottom-basement prices may impact safety and patients should proceed carefully before putting their faces in the hands of just anyone.”

US Plastic Surgeons Launch New ‘Liquid Facelift’

US experts have introduced a new combination of powerful dermal fillers for a new method of non-invasive facelift.

The product is called the Liquid Facelift and the treatment involves multiple dermal fillers as well as Botox. A combination of non-surgical methods used for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines around the eyes and forehead and adding definition to the face.

Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, Dr Assassa, reviewed the new cosmetic treatment: “The combination of Botox and advanced dermal fillers has delivered results that surpass the results of the top experts in the field of facial rejuvenation.

“Liquid Face Lift procedures generally take around an hour and patients can return to most normal routines the next day. You get the results of a traditional face lift, minus the pain, expense and inconvenience.”

Studies have reported that patients expect less recovery time and surgical interventions as facial lifts and rejuvenation procedures are becoming more and more common.

Cosmetic Surgery For The Dead

This should not come as a surprise. Afer all we want to look our best while are living so why not when we are dead?

According to a Mr. Mark Duffey who runs Everest Funeral in the US this optional extra (do you want Botox with your cremation) is proving to be quite a hit with his more pruned clients.

According to quotes on the Metro web site Mark said  ”People used to say, ‘Just throw me in a pine box and bury me in the back yard’,”

“But that’s all changing. Now people want to be remembered. A funeral is their last major event and they want to look good for it.  I’ve even had people say (ED. i hope he means the living), ‘I want you to get rid of my wrinkles and make me look younger’.”

Botox ‘Reverses Ageing Process’

A research has reported that botox injections can really make a positive impact on your skin.

The study was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. It investigated the skin condition of two patients who had their wrinkles and fine lines treated with Botox injections, a non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

The research was of very small scale, but it was noticed that botox had caused positive effects on the quality of both the patients‘ skin conditions. The patients were monitored for a total of 7 years.

The participants did not notice any new wrinkles forming and enjoyed smooth, youthful and naturally looking skin. “I have found that with short-term use, expression lines still remain, but over the long term creases actually disappear, meaning the smoothing effect does not wear off when the botox does.”

Another way Botox injections are used in cosmetic surgery is stopping underarm sweating.
