Guide To Cosmetic Surgery - Penis Enlargement
Penis enlargement
Another name for this is ‘penile augmentation’ surgery. This is the term for the procedure carried out to increase the length and girth (width) of the penis.
There are many men who feel that they are lacking in this department. They can become caught up in the ‘size matters’ argument and may feel inadequate or less masculine as a result.
There are several methods for enlarging the penis which include pumps, pills and massage techniques but surgery is still the best way to achieve this goal.
Very few men actually have a small penis. This is an unusual condition which is picked up in childhood and treated with the hormone testosterone.
A smaller than average penis will function normally. Any problems are usually due to a lack of self-esteem following perceived poor performance (intercourse)
Suitability for penis enlargement surgery
The usual factors, such as age, your current state of health and reasons for surgery are taken into account. This surgery does give good results but you do need to be realistic about what it can achieve.
If you are in good physical health and are emotionally stable then you will be considered.
At the consultation the surgeon will take a full medical history. He or she will ask you if you have any allergies, if you have undergone surgery before and what type and if you are on any medication.
Please be honest and upfront about this. If there is anything in your medical history which could affect the outcome of your surgery then mention this. Your surgeon wants to be sure that you are safe and fit enough to undergo surgery. All surgery is risky and it is important that you are aware of this and what can potentially go wrong.
Failure to mention something could increase the risk of complications or affect the results of the surgery itself.
The surgeon will have a set of criteria which he or she will use to assess your suitability for this procedure. If he or she advises you against having this procedure then it will be for a very good reason.
One factor that will be taken into account is that of smoking. If you are a smoker then you will be asked to stop for a set period of time before the procedure. And, not to resume smoking until otherwise directed.
The surgeon would prefer it if you would give up altogether but realises that this can be a difficult thing to do. If you are thinking about doing so then he or she can help. He/she may be able to recommend a stop smoking programme or other related sources of help.
What you will find is that the surgeon will not operate if you are still smoking around the time of your procedure.
Preparation for surgery
There are a set of guidelines which cover pre-surgery as well as post-surgery issues. These will be given to you at the consultation.
These guidelines will include when to have your last meal (and drink) before surgery, what will happen on the day of surgery, the procedure itself and the recovery. It will also include a list of which medications you can and cannot take. This will apply to both prescription and ‘over the counter’ medicines.
This procedure can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic. If you opt for a general anaesthetic then be aware that there are more potential risks with this than with the other types. Some patients also find that they feel sick and dizzy afterwards although modern anaesthetics have largely reduced this problem.
It is a good idea to ask someone to drive you and from the hospital. This is essential if you opt for a general anaesthetic and a good idea if you have a local anaesthetic. In either case you will be tired, sore and in some pain and so driving is not recommended.
As you will be expected to get plenty of rest after surgery then it’s a good idea to get a few things ready in advance. These include buying in ready prepared meals (or cooking meals in advance), preparing ice packs (to reduce any swelling), making sure you have enough painkillers and prescription medicines and buying antibacterial soap, gauze, dressings and scar reducing creams.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of your surgery and for when you are back at home. Sweatpants or drawstring style trousers and loose tops are ideal.
And, when you are at home then make sure you will have a good supply of magazines, books or the TV remote control close to hand. You will be spending a week or so at home so use this time to rest and heal up.
And, don’t forget to ask for time off work. You are looking at a week before you can return to work although everyone differs in this aspect.
The penis enlargement procedure
There are several types of penis enlargement surgery although the main one performed in the UK is called ‘penoplasty’. The penis can be both lengthened and enlarged.
These can be performed as individual procedures or both together.
You will be given either a general anaesthetic or a local with IV sedation. The procedure takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete although this will depend on whether you have an individual procedure or both together.
The genital area will be shaved in both these procedures.
Lengthening
He or she will make a small incision above the base of the penis. He/she will then cut the basal penile ligament which suspends it (this ligament runs from the top of the pubic bone to the top of the penis).
This will cause the penis to drop forward which means it will appear to be longer. It can be increased in length by 20 to 50%.
The ligament is re-attached lower down. A flap of skin is removed from the pubic bone area and use to cover this ‘new’ extension.
The incisions are closed with a series of dissolvable stitches although the non-dissolvable ones may be used instead.
Note: any post surgery erection will remain at the same size albeit at a slightly lower angle.
Enlargement
Liposuction is used to increase the width (girth) of the penis. A minor liposuction procedure is carried out to remove fat from the thighs or abdomen. This will be transferred via an injection into the penis.
This fat injection avoids any incision scars which will speed up the recovery time.
The penis can be increased in width by 30 to 50%.
This increase will be noticeable in both flaccid and erect states.
Other procedures include penile injection and inflatable implants. The penile injection involves injecting liquid silicone into the penis, and scrotum which can have dramatic results. However, it has side effects such as loss of sensation, deformation and inability to perform sexual intercourse.
Recovery
You will experience some pain and soreness for the first days. Your penis will feel swollen and bruised and there may be some numbness as well. This will all ease after a week or two.
You will be given pain relief medication to control this.
There may be a small scar at the base of your penis but this will be hidden by the re-growth of your pubic hair.
If you choose to have your penis lengthened then your surgeon may advise you to use special penis extenders to assist with this.
It is a good idea to massage your penis each day with Vaseline to prevent any lumps forming or the penis becoming unbalanced.
Other advice includes getting plenty of rest and allowing your body time to heal. Avoid any lifting, carrying or bending down and do not overstrain yourself. Avoid strenuous activities for a month after surgery.
Abstain from sexual activity for a month following surgery.
It can be 3 to 6 months before the full results are seen.
You will be asked to attend a series of check ups which are designed to check upon your progress.
Most patients go through the recovery period without any problems at all but if you do notice any of the following symptoms then contact the hospital or clinic immediately.
These include:
- Adverse reaction to the anaesthetic
- Infection
- Excessive bleeding
- Sharp, intense pain
- Chest pains
- Shortness of breath
- Irregular or racing heartbeat
The benefits of penis enlargement
The majority of patients are pleased with the results. They report a sense of improved confidence, wellbeing and better quality of life. They feel that their masculinity has been boosted and are better able to satisfy their partner.
The risks of penis enlargement
This procedure like any other form of surgery does have its risks. Complications are rare but do happen and it is wise to be aware of these.
In the main there are risks inherent to all forms of surgery which include bad reaction to anaesthesia, haematoma (blood or fluid collects under the skin), nerve damage, deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs), infection and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs).
