Male Breast Reduction
Look better, feel better
Gynaecomastia is an enlargement of the male breast as a result of an abnormal increase in the glandular tissue. It is quite common, affecting an estimated 40 to 60% of men in varying degrees. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, surgery to reduce the breast can help.
What is the procedure?
Liposuction is used to remove the fatty tissue under a general anaesthetic. Small incisions are then made around the nipple and at other sites in the chest. A small metal tube (cannula) is used to suck out the fatty tissue. If necessary, glandular tissue is also removed through incisions at the border of the nipple. The incisions are then sutured to give a flatter, firmer and better-contoured chest. Any stitches will be of the dissolving type and so do not need to be removed.
Could I be a suitable candidate for male breast reduction?
You may be a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery if you have one or more of the following problems:
- Self-consciousness about the largeness of your breasts
- Abnormal appearance not easily covered by clothing
- Asymmetry in breast (chest) size
Surgery can be performed on healthy, emotionally stable men of any age. The best candidates for surgery have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body's new contours.
Will I really look and feel better after male breast reduction?
Psychological distress caused by having large breasts can include:
- Difficulty in finding clothes that fit
- Depression
- Unwanted attention
- Harassment
- Self-consciousness
Male breast reduction surgery can provide a solution to all these problems and can lead to increased self-confidence and higher self-esteem.
