Guide To Non-Surgical Procedures - Obagi Skin Care

Obagi Skin Care

Also known as the Obagi Blue Peel: this non-surgical treatment can revitalise tired or ageing skin. We are all too aware of the effects of the ageing process on our skins and this combined with stress, our lifestyles, pollution and sun exposure can show itself in a variety of ways.

These ways include spots, blemishes, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, black/whiteheads, dry skin and rough, scaly patches. These are just some of the more common skin ailments.

Your skin is one of the first things people notice about you when meeting you for the first time and a clear, smooth and radiant looking skin gives a more positive impression.

We cannot stop the ageing process (yet) but this as well as other cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers, microdermabrasion and botulinum toxin can temporarily put the brakes on!

We have a section devoted to chemical peels which gives more information about this treatment. The Obagi Blue Peel is one specific type of chemical peel which will be discussed here in more detail…

Who is suitable for Obagi skin care?

This treatment is suitable for a wide range of people, with differing skin types and complexions. It can remove dull or damaged layers of skin from the face and other areas of the body. The face is usually the preferred area for this treatment.

There are a set of criteria which are used to determine if a patient is suitable for a cosmetic procedure. This equally applies to surgical and non-surgical procedures. The surgeon or practitioner will consider your age, skin type (if appropriate), current state of health, emotional wellbeing and lifestyle. The healthier you are the better the results of the procedure.

Smoking, late nights, unhealthy diet and too much alcohol can all have a negative impact upon your skin.

The practitioner is not there to pass judgement on you about this and any other aspect of your lifestyle. He or she will instead be keen for you to get the best results you can from this treatment.

The Obagi Skin Care procedure

The practitioner will cleanse the designated area to start with before applying layers of the chemical peel. The face is often the preferred area but a chemical peel can be applied to chest, back, neck, arms and legs.

Each layer takes up to an hour depending on the number of layers to be applied. A single layer usually takes around 20 minutes.

You will notice a slight burning sensation as each layer is applied but this is only lasts for a few minutes. The practitioner will use a fan to ease this sensation.

Your skin will have a bluish tint – hence the name ‘Obagi Blue Peel’ and this tint will then be washed off.

Your treated skin will peel over the next few days which will leave you with invigorated, smooth and healthy looking skin. It will have a noticeable sheen and will improve your appearance as a whole.

You are looking at a week to 10 days to recover from this procedure. As this is a non-surgical treatment there is no ‘downtime’: by this we mean you do not have to take any time off work and can carry on with your normal everyday activities.

The benefits of Obagi Skin Care

The most obvious one is that of younger and fresher looking skin. Those unwanted signs of the ageing process such as fine lines and wrinkles will have disappeared and you may find that family and friends compliment you on your new look.

Are there any risks?

All cosmetic procedures come with side effects and complications. These tend to be greater for surgical procedures than non-invasive procedures such as chemical peels.

The only side effect with the Obagi Skin Care treatment is that of sore and reddened skin but this will ease over a couple of days. This reddened skin will peel away to reveal your new, improved skin.
