Otoplasty
For an improved, natural look
Protruding ears can be a source of embarrassment for children and adults alike. Ear reshaping surgery is a straightforward procedure. Most patients are children aged between four and fourteen; however ear surgery on adults is also possible.
What is the procedure?
Skin and cartilage are removed from behind the ears, following which they are sculpted to bend them back toward the head. Stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape, with the incision marks cleverly concealed in the natural crease behind the ear. An alternative technique, where no cartilage is removed, uses stitches to fold the exposed cartilage back on itself and so reshape the ear, again concealing the stitches in the natural crease behind the ear.
Could I be a suitable candidate for otoplasty?
You may be a good candidate for otoplasty (ear pinning and reshaping surgery) if you have one or more of the following conditions:
- Larger than normal ear lobes
- Non-symmetrical ears
- Ears that ‘stick out’ disproportionately
Am I a suitable age for otoplasty?

Tell me more about children and otoplasty
Children's ears are usually fully developed by age 4. There are no additional risks associated with age. The procedure is usually performed to improve the appearance of the ears so that the child would not have to endure ridicule from peers throughout their childhood.
Firmer cartilage of fully developed ears in adults does not provide the same ‘shaping’ capacity as in children. Having the procedure at a young age is highly desirable for two reasons:
- The cartilage is extremely pliable, thereby permitting greater ease of shaping
- The child will experience psychological benefits earlier from the cosmetic improvement
Will I really look better and feel better after otoplasty?
Otoplasty can achieve outstanding results. However, your expectations need to be realistic. The procedure is used to improve rather than to perfect. That said, most patients are thrilled with the results.
