Tummy Tuck

Look great, feel great!

A Tummy Tuck is a procedure that will remove excess fat and skin from around the waist and will leave a flatter, lower body profile and younger-looking abdomen.

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the repair and tightening of the abdominal muscles, along with the removal of the excess skin, may greatly improve body contour and appearance. However, suitable candidates are in good physical and emotional health, understand the procedure and have realistic expectations. Your surgeon can explain the details of the procedure, the type of anaesthetic to be used, the extent of skin removal and muscle repair and the expected recovery period.

What is the procedure?

Most commonly during a tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. A second incision is then made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. Your surgeon will then separate the skin from the abdominal wall and will lift a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. The muscles are then pulled together and stitched into a new position so that they are tighter. The peeled back flap of skin and fat is then stretched downwards towards the initial incision and any extra tissue is removed.

The incision is subsequently sutured closed, but not before a new hole is cut for your navel, which is then also stitched, leaving a flatter and younger looking abdomen.

Could I be a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty produces excellent slimming and shaping results, giving a flatter and tighter abdomen. That said, you have to be realistic in your expectations. The effects of a tummy tuck are generally long lasting, provided you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

Will I really look and feel better after a tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty is a very popular surgical procedure with a high patient satisfaction rate, and is often the only option left for people with excess skin, usually as a result of child birth or massive weight loss.

The main benefit of an abdominoplasty is the general improvement of the abdomen. Each layer of the abdomen has to be considered: skin, fatty tissue and underlying muscle. All these layers may be stretched or weakened, usually due to pregnancy or weight loss.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery benefits are the following:

  • Improves the abdominal wall so it becomes firmer and flatter
  • Reduces the bulge of the tummy following pregnancy
  • Improves the appearance of stretch marks, especially those located below the navel
  • Improves your self-esteem and general confidence

Can men have a tummy tuck?

Yes. More and more men are having tummy tucks and, like women, are even combining tummy tucks with liposuction.

What is my first step?

Every year, thousands of people throughout the UK benefit enormously from tummy tuck surgery, but only through an in-depth discussion with your surgeon will you be able to truly understand the benefits, risks and expected outcomes of this procedure.
